Marco Douma

audiovisueel - video - geluid - tekenen

Visual artist who focusses on moving images and sound. In his video work and video installations, viewers are guided to a moment of contemplation. A moment to withdraw from the hectic of daily reality and get away from trivial thoughts and worries. In his work he defines the indefinable space. The space where foreground and background dissolve into each other.
What inspires him is the sensation of slowing down movements, rhythm and colours in (everyday) nature and surroundings. Often close by. You see them in a split second, a delayed image that stops your thoughts for a moment. As if the world stands still for a moment. He captures these moments and works them out. He wants to emphasise the sensation he experiences by making the moment last longer and transforming it into fluid movements. The delay acts as a catalyst to remove yourself from your surroundings within seconds. Time and space dissolve.

The ceaseless progression of the past, gnawing up the future and swelling progressively - Stills of the 20 minute video made with Roel Meelkop in 2022.
HOEK - The video shown here is a one minute teaser of the HOEK project. Hoek van Holland, or as most people call it, ‘de Hoek’ (literally Corner of Holland, or ‘the Corner’) was originally built in the late 19th century as a defence for the Port of Rotterdam. In World War II it became part of the defence line of the Nazi’s called the Atlantikwall. They built vast underground bunkers in the dunes, many of which are still intact. Some of these are open for public, but most are closed or only accessible to a selected few. The other side of the river shows the industry of the Port of Rotterdam, mainly lots of cranes (un)loading containers from the huge ships that bring them here. But de Hoek is also a seaside resort with wide beaches and matching beach clubs, assuring a wide range of entertainment. And, last but not least, de Hoek has a beautiful dune landscape, giving home to flora and fauna that cannot be found elsewhere. This mix of activities is something very unique to the town and reason for Roel to ask video artist Marco Douma to collaborate on the project. This resulted in a sound/video performance in one of the beach clubs in 2012. In this live installation called ‘Atlantic Wall’ they focused on Hoek’s surroundings. In 2014 they were asked to participate in a new exhibition in de Hoek. That year they decided to go down into the bunkers, resulting in the sound/video installation ‘Kiel’ in one of the bunkers that is normally closed to the public. In the years after this Roel and Marco fantasised about the idea to combine the material of both works in a third edition, which resulted in a sound/video piece in 2020, titled ‘Hoek’. This CD and handmade book contain the sound piece and stills from the video work. The book was reproduced with a Nashuatec 1505 copier, which gives a nice gritty look. And then cut/folded/assembled by Roel Meelkop, Marco Douma, Jeroen Diepenmaat and Harco Rutgers. The video work is accessible via a password-protected link, included in the book ánd the download.

Drawings - Challenged by this COVID 19 intelligent lockdown I bought a pile of drawing paper in march 2020 at the start of the self isolation era. Along with charcoal, siberian chalk, pastel chalk, color pencils and loads of erasers I started making drawings. Every lost moment on any day I used to draw. Instead of meeting people I met the white of paper. The size of each drawing is 21 x 29,7 cm. This series was shown at the GRAW studio exhibition at Stichting B.a.d, september 2020.
SETfest Performance - For well-known reasons, the Iranian organisation SET was not hosting a physical, but an online edition of their festival year 2020. It is dubbed Unison, and on June 12 2020, a 45-minute live AV-set from Machinefabriek and Marco Douma was part of the program. The gig was pre-recorded, but done in a live-setting, at Foundation B.a.d in Rotterdam.
