Marit Shalem, born in Haifa, Israel, 1971, moved to Berlin in 1989 just two months before the wall went down. After graduating at the HdK (now UdK), Berlin, an exchange period in Glasgow and one in Rotterdam, she has moved to Rotterdam. She also works under the name SpOp initiating experimental video works and visual art projects. These projects follow an artistic research into recent visual culture and the impact of commerce on human communication. Between 2014-2016 she has curated the film series Layers in WORM, Rotterdam. In 2018 she has produced the three channel installation Broom-Groom. In the period 2018-2020 she has collaborated with musician Badgewearer for the project Works on White with international performances.
Shalem has recently been awarded the Culture Prize South Holland 2022, given by the Prins Bernhard Cultural Fund. Her installation Alterations has been exhibited at the _V2Lab and at the Rotterdam Theater. Her documentary video installation Milk is planned for TENT Rotterdam in 2024.

    • Milk - A video installation dealing with the topic of cow's milk consumption since the industrialization. This as an overall reason to touch upon societal structures and tendencies. 34 video components containing interviews, landscapes and archive material, alter upon 5 screens and monitors in a spatial, immersive situation in an 80min. loop. The project has received its major support from the Mondriaan fund. It has been tested and presented lately at the Goethe institute, Rotterdam and expected in 2024 at TENT, Rotterdam.
