Jason Coburn - Gouache wall drawing, 190cm x 190cm, 2012.
Five-Day Week - Wall drawing (with Karen Scrijvers and Carola Dalessi) For the duration of the piece (in this case, a 15-week exhibition), the receptionists make a tally mark every working day on the reception wall.
The Etcetera Principle - An audiovisual essay taking E.H. Gombrich’s notion of the Etc. Principle as a way of navigating pattern and decoration through a selection of images and non-sequiturs. The Etcetera Principle describes the point at which the detail of a mass becomes lost in an overall texture – the moment where we go from reading to reading in: “The blob may be a man or it may be a brush, but while we wonder, we tentatively transform it.” The lecture uses a sampling methodology to construct a mutating lecture. The starting point is the Canaletto painting Gombrich uses to illustrate his Etc. Principle idea. It then develops through a series of fluid and disjointed transitions to an endpoint discussing the legal implications of a seemingly simple toilet paper pattern. The pejorative notion of the ‘decorative’ is challenged and in the process suggests a visual criticality as merited by historic, cultural, and scientific developments.
