My artworks are using a corporate imagery to settle a world that is constantly walking on a thin line, between the ridicule and the ominous. Through it, I attempt to point out the archaisms, the persistence of authoritarian structures in a society that tries to keep an “advanced” and “modern” image.
Notably, I often question the morality of work: the urge for employment and the contempt of the idleness, a topic which is commonly instrumentalized in the public debate. I try to extend this framework extends to larger existential topics, such as our relation to social conventions or the passing of time. To do it, I adopt a distanced point of view, by putting the viewer or myself in the position of a stranger, or even an intruder to the chaotic environments I present.
The dryness of standardized furniture and the stubborn repetitive acts are always counteracted by an incongruous element, a glimpse of absurdness which appear in different ways depending on the works. I take on charismatic attitudes to measure how close they are to the ridiculous, or conversely, I transform the most innocuous and idiotic actions into acts of sabotage: for example, by copying documents in a damaging way for the text and the support (Taphonomy) or by thwarting the use of furniture (Growth, We Make It Happen). By doing so, I point out our illusory confidence in our daily routines, to settle a score with our alienation. I aim to put reality at a distance by questioning its own image.

Taphonomy ( series )
Taphonomy ( series ) - Series of works: text-engraving on tables or on wood plates/ variable dimensions/ 2015-ongoing/ -( pictured: Taphonomy ( II ), Korean immigration law carved on table: 70x60x80 cm, exhibited at Incheon Art Platform, South korea, 2015).- the pages of a document are randomly engraved with a metal point on a wood table. Taphonomy - from the Greek taphos, meaning burial, and nomos, meaning law- refers to the study of accumulation processes and preservation of fossilized remains.
Taphonomy III
Taphonomy III - Engraved text on wood, 20 pieces, 2022. This version of the Taphonomy series is a contribution for the project Pakje Kunst, an initiative of the Tilburg-based artist Ro-Nalt Schrauwen, inspired by the german Kunstautomat. In this version, pages of the dutch work law are engraved in a wood plate, which is sewn in 20 pieces to be distributed in the automats. A Q-R code is joined, so the buyers can join the artist to reconstruct the artwork.
Serie Hotel Particulier
Hotel Particulier ( serie) - Serie of drawings, Ink on paper, variable dimensions, 2025 A new drawing series made like an exercise in style, with a simple setup: each present a view of luxurious residencies with ominous backgrounds: dark skies, smoke plumes or heavy fogs made of obsessive intertwined lines: A variation on disaster.
Zeitgeister
Zeitgeister - wood, engraved plexiglas, neonlights/ 250x180x150cm/ 2024/ Site-specific installation at Galerie Lecq, Rotterdam.- In a time of crisis, ravening reactionary forces progress by undermining democracy with a wave of fallacious rhetorics and avid corporate mindset. ZEITGEISTER solidifies this movement in a monument of shamelessness, cheap wood and plexiglass. The sentences are taken from Professional Negociation & Influencing, an ENS International management manual: https://negotiate.org/ The Installation features portraits of politicians and businesspeople involved with far-right and socially conservative policies.
Monster
Monster - wood, metal, furniture, carpet/450x300x250cm/ 2023/ Site-specific installation at Growing Space Wielevaal, Rotterdam. - Monster is an ordinary workspace swallowed up by a grotesque, distorted floor. But the installation seems to mock the very notion of chaos, with its IKEA-Showroom esthetics stuck under the glasshouse like a theatre scene. The situation provokes a paradoxical feeling of eeriness and derision.
KAPR Project
KAPR Project - ***Project in collaboration with Astera Mortezai*** 2 sculptures: wood, PVC 350g/m², thread/ 200x250x250cm each/ Workshop: min. 5 participants, variable duration/ 2024/ -( picture: concert of violonist Anan Alkadamani in one of the Kapr, Festival De Verwondering, Gouda, sept. 2024)- It is a poetic workshop, inspired by the seasonal return of nomads in Kurdistan’s mountains: the public is invited to cover two sculptures with a patchwork made of text fragments printed on banner. The selection of texts, translated in various languages to reflect the population’s diversity on site, is considered by the artists to fit the concept of «bullshit», coined by Harry Frankfurt: fallacious discourses, advertisements, scams, esoteric babblings... The texts are cut word by word and left for the participants to be rearranged to create their own poetry, haïkus, aphorisms or jokes. With this symbolic reappropriation of language, we create a common good in the form of a ceiling of literature. After the patchworks are made, the sculptures can host other artists for their own events: performances, lectures, or music. The patchwork is extended at each new workshop as a work in progress.
Moot
Moot - wood, metal, Microphones/ 320x100x260cm/ 2021/ -Moot is an installation made of two colliding pulpits, surmounted by a makeshift barricade. Each side contains a lectern with microphones, usable by the public. Originally meant to be a satire of sterile conflict and, above all, a criticism of their dramatization, Moot turned out to have a more subtle effect on the public who experienced it at the Modelburgers exhibition in Gouda. The presence of the barricade, preventing the two parties from seeing each other, disconcerted many visitors, embarrassed by the impossibility of establishing eye contact with the interlocutor and supporting their speech with gestures. Paradoxically, the barricade also acts as a protective, almost intimate cocoon - a bit like a confessional - encouraging some visitors, who are usually shy, to assert themselves more. At a time when a large part of our communication is done online, via keyboards, without visual contact, the experience reminds us of the importance of the body in communication, particularly in the modulation of our rhetoric, and highlights resulting problems, such as misunderstandings, bullying or confusion.
Growth
Growth - wood, metal, chair feet/ 400x450x250cm/ 2023/ - There is the idea of a standardized, domesticated environment which is slowly collapsing in madness. The English title, «Growth», is more ambivalent than its French translation: it can refer to several forms of growths, especially the worrying one of a tumor.
Liblos Zusammengepresst (series)
Lieblos Zusammengepresst (series) - series of drawings, lacker, marker and pen on paper/ Variable dimensions/ 2012-2015, 2019-2021/ -( pictured: Apparent Signs, from the series Lieblos Zusammengepresst, 130x100cm, 2022 )
Echelons
Echelons - serie of drawings: marker, pen and oil on paper/ 60x42cm each / 2023-ongoing/ Exhibition view at Het Archief, Rotterdam, 2023./ -They are very simple scenes, a variation on the different interactions between figures and scales, amalgamated into silhouettes. The staging is voluntarily reduced to two elements: characters in costume, often men -but it is not necessary- treated in a naturalistic but anonymous way, avoiding faces and individual expressions: they are almost mannequins. The ladders, reduced to a flat white silhouette, form a kind of grid that cuts out the background. Scene after scene, we see confused situations appear, absurd elements disturbing the seriousness of the poses.
Flagship
Flagship - wood, carpet, metal, clothing/ 125x300x200cm/ 2018/ -Flagship is inspired by two well-known paintings of the romantism: The Sea of Ice (1823-24) of C.D.Friedrich and The Raft of the Medusa (1819) by T. Géricault. The dramatic setup of the two paintings is parodied with furniture and office clothing to create an image of today´s social bitterness, reminding of the disillusioned mind of the romantism.
Flag March
Flag March - shirt, nylon wire, copper, wood, videoprojection/ Video HDV, 4mn54, looped/ 150x100x70cm/ 2020-2022/ - An archetypal office worker is transported away from the urban settings where we are used to seeing him. Here he is trapped in an endless, aimless march, carrying – or pulled by – a sort of DIY flag, in a setting as bucolic as it is depopulated.
The Long Arm
The Long Arm - Video HDV, 2mn38/ Object: wood, metal/ 70x200x20cm/ 2017/ -Exhibition view: TEMI Residency, Daejeon, South Korea, 2017.- A desk is used to build a portable, poseable but heavy prop that appears to be a cross between a wingsuit and a pair of puppet hands. Like the object, the performance combines a wide range of gestures and evocations, from the first flights of the pioneers to political speeches. The Long Arm shines a light on the fine line that separates heroism from ridicule.
20 Tableaux Inestimables
20 Tableaux Inestimables - Digital prints on Hahnemühle Bamboo 290g/m²/ 20 images, 24x30 cm/ 2014/ - This work reproduces an annotated photo from the French newspaper Le Monde, showing a billionaire whose «20 priceless tableaux» has been stolen. The photo is repeated 20 times, each time with different date and place, which refers to historical events such as riots, wars, or assassinations.four examples of the prints- the texts in French reads: «Esther Koplowitz has been stolen of 20 priceless tableaux on ( day ) at (place)».
