My name is Alessio and I am a digital artist and design researcher based between Rotterdam (NL) and Venice (IT). As an avid explorer of digital technologies and a natural sciences enthusiast, my practice is located at the intersection of the virtual and physical worlds. My work spans 3D modeling and music production, but also material research to push the boundaries of digital fabrication and storytelling towards unknown lands.

An Amalgam Loop
An Amalgam Loop - By creating a self-regulating system, An Amalgam Loop challenges the dichotomy between active and inert matter and brings the animacy of geologic entities between human perceptual thresholds. The project proposes a more empathetic approach to inorganic matter challenging Western sciences analytical way of relating to it. An Amalgam Loop has been selected to participate in We Will Design 25 - Making Kin during Milan Design Week 25, in Beyond (Design) Frontiers at UM Gallery, UMPRUM and in Graduation Show during Dutch Design Week 24 in Eindhoven.
An Amalgam Paradigm: for an embodied pracitce of empathy with an inorganic aggregates ecosystem
An Amalgam Paradigm: for an embodied pracitce of empathy with an inorganic aggregates ecosystem - An Amalgam Paradigm is a publication about isomorphies; about blends of flesh and limestone that think, erode and sediment into each others. Ever since I was a child, I have always been deeply fascinated by natural sciences, specifically the inorganic ones. When I started this thesis, I had the opportunity to turn a lens on myself and research why I was specifically drawn to such subjects. There seems to be some kind of magic that envelopes matter, in general. That makes it agglomerate in all its forms, in its behaviors, and makes it emerge in what we consider as life. To get to know it we disassembled, isolated, extracted and categorized it; we have given names to (almost) every sensible form of it, and we have dedicated disciplines and studies trying to define it, finally classifying what we consider animated and what not. An Amalgam Paradigm is an attempt to erode these hierarchies, a call for a paradigm shift towards a more systemic and horizontal view of reality. In this essay, I empathized with geologic matter — making stones think like humans and humans lithify like stones — in order to show our shared amalgamic belonging. Extending beyond the geologic subject, the amalgamic nature reveals also intrinsic to the publication itself, unfolding the inner potential of interdisciplinary cluster; and positioning it both as research and research subject itself.
Landscape Transfer
Landscape Transfer - In the digital era, society's obsession with archiving data feeds a machine that transforms physical resources into digital memories. Landscape Transfer maps the metamorphosis of rare earths into virtual landscapes. The name "rare earths” refers to a pool of mineral elements that, despite their name, are scattered all over the earth's crust. Their extraction, besides resulting in serious environmental consequences, is the first step in what has been called Landscape Transfer. These materials are in fact used in the production of magnets and microchips involved in the electronics industry; and feed the hardware support for modern society insatiable appetite for archiving vast amount of data. Along this panorama, Landscape Transfer aims to create a vocabulary of the steps these elements take towards their digitalisation, tracing the roles and the line of transformation from a physical to a virtual landscape.
Transhabitat
Transhabitat - Transhabitat embodies a transformative exploration of the Venetian saltmarshes’ identity, aiming to establish a connection between human and ecological identity in order to evoke an ecosystem consciousness. Drawing upon the notion of the idol as a medium, the project bridges the gap between the individual and the collective consciousness embodied by the saltmarshes.
Transhabitat, publication
Transhabitat, publication - Parallel to its homonymous project, Transhabitat publication explores the — ever-changing and temporary — Venetian lagoon territory through the geontological theories of Elizabeth Povinelli. The lagoon is a temporary ecosystem by nature, born of gradual sedimentation and by gradual sedimentation destined to die.
[...] prima di dormire
[...] prima di dormire - [...] prima di dormire is the name of an (almost) imageless movie; a movie projected with closed eyes, like the ones before sleeping. Offering an extract of the daily life in the Venetian province, this subtitles movie is a brief introspective journey intended to leave space for mental images.
From+to the lagoon
From+to the lagoon - From+to the Lagoon is an open-ended project that aims to create a vocabulary of democratic design experiments that can promote small scale marshlands protection. The project investigates possible preservation practices through the use of reeds and simple techniques like tatching.
From+to the lagoon publication
From+to the lagoon, publication - From+to the Lagoon publication investigates possible preservation practices through the use of already and simple techniques like tapping. Using as a case study the tidal flats of the upper Adriatic gulf, the publication explores the anthropic implications of these environments, and how traditional techniques can develop a positive feedback both for the community and wet territories. The publication also takes a small close-up on the maritime and lagoon traditions of the small village of Caorle — north of the more infamous Venetian lagoon — with a small collection of pictures shot at the so-called Isola dei Pescaori (Fishermen's Island).
Narrating the Cracks
Narrating the Cracks - Using 3D scanning and procedural modeling as a storytelling method, Narrating the Cracks explores the political consequences of climate change in Trentino communities. Ripples on the wood bark become steep slopes that tell the story of independence of the Alpine communities through forests. Tree trunks turn to be a center of semantic gravitation which fauna, humans and communities infrastructure revolve around. Extreme weather events, temperature variations and geopolitical changes determine mutations in this symbiont.
