"Pencil on paper is a constant source of inspiration for Alexandra Roozen and leads her to further explore drawing’s possibilities and boundaries. She makes her works using a labor-intensive process, with which she reacts against the current culture of efficiency and the fast-paced visual culture that we are confronted with in our daily lives. As a counterbalance, she explores methods for stillness and contemplation, both in the working process and in the viewing process.
In large drawings she explores that repetition is never the same. Based on set work rules, she repeats endless small hand gestures such as stripes, scratches and lines. None of them can be drawn identically, it reflects the constant changes in the moment itself. The full impact reveals itself by replicating the process and design and presenting the resulting works in series. This challenges the viewer to look again and again, from the smallest element to the larger whole and vice versa"
