Untitled - 2023 | Graphite and gouache on paper | 30 x 40 cm | This drawing is of a scale model of the Schouwburgplein, in Rotterdam. In this work I wanted to reflect on the decision making involved in urban planning. Who makes the decisions, and who are they made for?
Untitled - 2023 | Oil on wood | 90 x 110 cm | This work depicts a fictive image of someone staring somewhat confused at a scale model of a new skyscraper proposal for the Coolsingel avenue in Rotterdam. Amidst the severe housing crisis that Rotterdam is currently going through, this painting echoes and gives voice to my own feelings about this topic, as it was painted while I was desperately searching for a house to live in.
Untitled - 2023 | Pastel on toned paper | 35 x 25 cm | This drawing is of a social housing block about to be demolished. I was interested in how the rough and scratched texture of the pastel reflects the surface of the building itself.
Scene at the Tweebosstraat - 2023 | Oil on canvas | 120 x 90 cm | This work depicts one of the last blocks of social housing still standing in a soon to be gentrified neighbourhood in south Rotterdam. I used two references of the same building and placed them next to each other to evoke the feeling that something is wrong. This is further reinforced by the awkward perspective between the two buildings and the lack of reflection in the water. Through these visual alienations, I wish to evoke feelings of temporality and instability that I associate to the housing market in Rotterdam.
The old railway I - 2023 | Oil on plasterboard | 80 x 70 cm | This painting is part of a triptych of sorts. Each painting depicts the same perspective onto downtown Rotterdam at different timestamps after the 1940 bombing. By placing these paintings next to each other, each showing three drastically moments in the city's history, I aimed to reflect on the temporality, uncertainty and flexibility of the urban landscape.
The old railway II - 2023 | Oil on plasterboard | 70 x 60 cm | Though at first glance the paintings might not make it obvious that they depict the exact same perspective over the city, there are elements which indicate this after a closer look, such as the ruins of the Laurenskerk, and the old railway which used to run above ground, crossing Blaak.
The old railway III - 2023 | Oil on plasterboard | 80 x 70 cm | These paintings were all done on pieces of recycled plasterboard I found. Though initially this choice was mainly practical (as I simply didn’t have any canvas or frames at my disposal at the time), I think the frail and slightly broken aesthetic of the plasterboard adds to the content of the paintings.
Edge of the city - 2024 | Oil on canvas | 50 x 75 cm
