Eden Calgie

Eden Calgie [b.1996, Middlesbrough] is a folk artist making 2.5D [two-and-a-half dimensional] sculpture, framing, photography, moving image, drawing, 3D print and digital art.
Eden uses photography because it allows a spontaneous, experimental and high-tempo process that forces disconnection of reflection and creation, this allows creation to come directly from the subconscious and placing oneself at the mercy of the environment is a path to more authentic artwork and explores one's sense of identity.
His research stems from an inclusive approach to the external factors that influence the creation of artwork. In order to do this he allows context [broadly: the physical environment, present situation and internal emotional environment of the artist] to directly influence the content. Merging the external and internal worlds.

The North American Landscape. Analogue 35mm Film Photographs, Triptych Series - Short visual stories depicting scenes from the united states in three pictures. ProperTease - “Proper Tease” (Solo), Silicone On Acrylic, Growing Space Wielewaal, Rotterdam South. Proper Tease presents several transparent paintings which recreate the subtlety of finger marks on fogged-up glass. Traces of Humanity. Just beyond reach. The greenhouse itself is the inspiration for this work, because the greenhouse defines how and why the work exists. The material choices acknowledge that the inhabited space has an important influence upon the artwork during its formation. Proper Tease is an ode to the powerful personality of spaces that contain art.

ScreenGrab [Yearly Calendar] - "ScreenGrab" is a monthly calendar of one year. Each page features an intriguing, odd, relatively-interesting yet ultimately... disposable images, made with smartphone cameras. Image archives memorising scenes from subtle absurdities found within everyday life. Each box marking a single day of the month is created from from a blank frame of a computer "window", the frames that contain all forms of content online.
“Vulture, Leer, Swoop”, Digital renders of 3D Models, Large format (A0) prints - Looking at the duality of the erect penis as a symbol of power or a threat and flaccid as a symbol of impotency or shame. 3D printing an absurd exaggeration of military masculinity and the sinister anonymity of military drones. Through use of a computer screen, we can de-pixelate and disappear. Should we blame these drones? They are semi-autonomous after all. Their human characteristics are a reflection of their autonomy; Comparing the anonymity of a computer in a network with the drone pilot. Embracing a positive nihilistic view, Calgie uses 3D printing to explore the savageness of apathy.
