Ewoud van Rijn

Het werk van Ewoud van Rijn wordt gevoed door zijn interesse in hoe kunst, wetenschap en spirituele stromingen elkaar overlappen, beïnvloeden en informeren; hoe kunst en spiritualiteit sinds de wetenschappelijke revoluties van de moderne tijd de wetenschappelijke strategieën van kennisproductie overnemen, maar tevens ruimte laten voor intuïtie en het irrationele. Van Rijn positioneert zijn praktijk binnen de opkomende gebieden ‘artistic research’ en ‘post-secular art’. In de eerste gebied wordt kunst verondersteld een bijdrage te leveren aan de culturele kenniseconomie vanuit een artistiek perspectief. Het tweede houdt zich bezig met de voortdurende invloed van het spirituele op het bredere culturele veld. Door deze dubbele positionering kunnen spirituele tendensen artistiek worden verkend, terwijl tegelijkertijd hun culturele betekenis wordt belicht en onderzocht.

Nosferatu's Mudra 2 - De tweede van een serie van drie tekeningen in inkt en acryl op papier gemonteerd op doek, gebaseerd op het werk van Kurt Seligmann 'Le deuxième main de Nosferatu. Het belichaamd de 'Gothic' thema's, ontleend aan populaire cultuur, die in het werk van Seligmann en dat van mijzelf steeds terugkeren. 90 x 130 cm. 2019.
Maldoror Militants 2 - De tweede van een serie van 4 droge naald/monotype drukwerken in 8 kleurgangen. Vier bewerkingen van een illustratie die Seligmann maakte voor de 1938 door André Breton geredigeerde uitgave van 'Les Chants de Maldoror' van Comte de Lautréamont. Het boek is in de collectie van het Boijmans van Beuningen museum, dat voor haar collectie deze serie drukwerk heeft aangekocht. Daarmee heeft het Boijmans elf van mijn werken in de collectie, van 2008 tot 2021.
Maldoror Militants 1 tm 4 - De hele serie 'Maldoror Militants' zoals gepresenteerd tijdens de tentoonstelling 'The Great Invocation' @ Garage Rotterdam. Curator: Pádraic E. Moore. Ik maakte zelf het ontwerp van de installatie als drager voor de verschillende series en werken die in deze tentoonstelling waren opgenomen.
Ancestor Worship - Collages en tekeningen op basis van Seligmann's schilderij 'Environs of the Chateau Argol'. Argol is tevens de titel van een boek van de Franse surrealistische schrijver Julien Gracq, dat zich afspeelt in een mythisch Bretagne, de landstreek in Frankrijk dat de meeste megalithische bouwwerken herbergt. Op deze vaak grillige steenvormen zijn deze collages en tekeningen geïnspireerd. Gepresenteerd tijdens 'The Great Invocation' @ Garage Rotterdam. 2021.
Magic Mother Morphology - Serie van 16 steen-lithos gebaseerd op reproducties van archeologische vondsten van pre-historische 'godinnen' beeldjes, zoals gepubliceerd in het boek 'The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe' van Marija Gimbutas uit 1974. Het werk van Gimbutas is lang omstreden geweest omdat het een feministische agenda zou hebben. Het is echter ook van grote invloed geweest op de opkomst van het fenomeen 'neo-paganism' in de laatste decennia. Dit werk is gepresenteerd tijdens het Groot Rotterdams Atelier Weekend 2021 en van daar uit vond een deel haar weg naar een privé collectie.

Four Infinities
Four Infinities - Litho, 220 gms Zerkall 4x) 45 x 65 cm. 2024 I use templates in a personalized method of automatism in print. The possible variation of using the templates as formative principle is infinite, as is, in principle, the possibility of the number of prints. The templates are the information shaping the work, like DNA in organisms. The infinity sign is connected to the double helix shape in DNA.
Family Demonology
Family Demonology - Litho series (ongoing), each print 21 x 30 cm.,2025 This series will be shown during the exhibition 'Leef Surrealisme', Wereldmuseum Rotterdam, from sept 17th 2026 (curator: Wouter Welling). After adopting the surrealist specialist on magic and the occult Kurt Seligman as artistic father, I turned to the subject of Family. Templates I use in a personalized method of automatism in print, are regarded as the DNA of several 'families' of work, like this one.
Barbelo
Barbelo - Barbelo, self produced paper on mdf. 60 x 60 cm. 2026 Barbelo is the name of a gnostic entity, the first female principle; the creative principle. Without permission she created a son, Yadalbaoth, the demiurgigal creator of the world. Yadalbaoth in his turn created offspring, demonic entities that went down to earth to teach the arts to 'the daughters of man'. In this myth creation flows from the feminine and is an act of necessity, urgency and rebellion.
