The Radiant Screen ( 47 min) 2025
The Radiant Screen ( 47 min) 2025 - ‘The Radiant Screen’ is a poetic film about the pursuit of a utopian fantasy. The film follows the journey of the filmmaker L., who is traveling through the red Siberian landscape in Russia, encircling a mysterious closed town: Железного́рск (Zheleznogorsk) This town, founded in the 1950s to house workers of a top-secret military scientific research center inside a mountain, was designed as a secret socialist utopia. To this day the city, hidden in the taiga, is closed; one can only gain access with a special pass. L. tries to approach the utopia and ‘making the film’ is part of this quest. Various perspectives on the place where the boundaries between idealism and surveillance blur, are juxtaposed. Enacted descriptions of Ж and contrasting narratives strengthen a sense of detachment and disappointment even. The barbed wire creates an imagery of a paradise built upon containment and exclusion. The film confronts broader questions and serves as both a reflection on socialist visions and a meditation on human longing and disillusionment with“ideal”systems. Does it feel like we are captured by our imagination, when we think of ideal societies and communities?
