Koen is a photographer, filmmaker, and educator. As a photographer, Koen created various travelling exhibitions and two books, Why I Cry on Airplanes (2020) and Leiden, Metropolis (2022). This last one was the product of his year as City Photographer (stadsfotograaf), an honorary position in his (then) hometown of Leiden (Netherlands). He is currently preparing Fleeting Fragments (Vlagen), an exhibition about how we remember, centered around his deceased parents.
His documentary film projects generally deal with the human rights of people who live on the fringes of society. Koen is known to observe without judging and for his ability to get under the skin of his protagonists. With his documentary Casting (2006), he became the first Dutch filmmaker to be nominated for a Spanish Academy Award (Goya). His multiple award-winning Karla’s Arrival (2011) was selected for more than 45 film festivals, broadcast in 15 countries, and won him modest international recognition. Recently, he worked on the Uruguayan production My New Way of Seeing, about a filmmaker who becomes blind after a stroke.
As a public speaker, Koen gave his first TED talk in 2015. He teaches image making at various universities, is a sought-after tutor for international writing, pitching or impact workshops, and serves on the jury of several film festivals.

Vlagen / Fleeting Flurries (in ontwikkeling)
