Loes van Duijvendijk

fotografie - publieke ruimte - urban

Loes van Duijvendijk is a photographer based in Rotterdam. From a constant longing for being elsewhere she mindfully explores the urban environment through photography. Her work is a personal and poetic translation of her experience in this proces. Therefore the relationship between photography and the perception of space plays an important role. By questioning the familiar way of representing places, the focus is on those singular details and structures that intrigue her.

Still Life, 2020 - “Six talented, young Rotterdam photographers were commissioned by the Droom en Daad Foundation to capture how the new virus is influencing our daily lives. Each from their own perspective, Khalid Amakran, Loes van Duijvendijk, Willem de Kam, Geisje van der Linden, Marwan Magroun and Naomi Modde shed light on different aspects of a city that seems frozen in its tracks. Although they were taken in the city of Rotterdam, the photographs in these series are exemplary of what has been happening in lots of cities all over the world.” - Kunsthal Rotterdam
Publieke Werken Rotterdam, 2020 - ‘Publieke Werken’ is an outdoor exhibition throughout the city with work by more than 400 visual artists, designers, photographers, image makers and illustrators. Simply to fill the void during Covid-19 and to show that imagination is better than advertising.

Reappear, 2018 Collaboration with Sylvana Lansu, MOMO ’18 and Groothandelsgebouw - Loes and Sylvana’s series Reappear pays tribute to the architectural space of the Groot Handelsgebouw, a ‘symbol’ of reconstruction turning 65 this year. To celebrate the building’s anniversary, the photographers wandered through its labyrinth of hallways for 65 hours. Guided by the architecture and the colors of the original design, they let themselves be surprised by the many still unknown features of the building. In the visual play between the two photographers, a new dimension (re)appears – one which is not drawn on paper or built in concrete, but one which becomes tangible in a photograph.
Emerge, 2016 - ‘Emerge' is a project initiated by photographers Loes van Duijvendijk and Sylvana Lansu. In need for new ways of looking at the city, they rediscover the rhythm of Rotterdam. Over the span of one year, they explored it’s geometric jungle. Colours and shapes turn into a visual language, nature and concrete become one. Silhouettes define the character of the city and alters the architecture from its original context. In the visual play between the two photographers, they question the common imagery of the metropolis. With ‘Emerge’ they present a new way of looking at the spatial identity of Rotterdam.
