Lorena van Bunningen is een fotografische poëet. Haar onderzoek begint met kijken naar de werkelijkheid, naar de materiële wereld. Ze maak (fotografische) stillevens die bestaan uit een grote verscheidenheid aan alledaagse objecten; een rekje, gekleurd papier, een buis of een stuk rubber. In haar atelier onderzoek ze de relaties tussen de dingen die ze verzamelt en probeert ze een ‘beweging’ te creëren; ze is altijd op zoek naar een samenstelling waarin de spanning voelbaar is tussen de elementen en in hun balans. Uitgangspunt daarbij is haar zoektocht naar een verstilling van de werkelijkheid. Een eerbetoon aan het alledaagse.

The Voice of Things (pose 10) - Oil pastel on dry clay, dry clay, found plastic object Werk gemaakt tijdens een residentie periode bij PADA, Lissabon, 2023 The Voice of Things is a shapeshifting installation consisting of fragile and temporary compositions that function as notes. Small and short ‘poses’ that ask to be remembered — a napkin in the corner, a towel on the floor. In this work I investigate time and temporality in relation to the creative process; should a work of art last forever, or can it be something temporary? The Voice of Things consist of everyday objects and materials paired with abstract ceramic pieces which shapes find their origin in things with a certain temporality — a bent piece of rubber, crumbled paper or a hanging piece of fabric. This way, the materials in the installation represent time by combining temporary and movable objects with materials that are durable and static. The work is a game in hard versus soft, moving versus static. Similarities and repetitions disorient the viewer. Are you looking at cardboard, paper, plastic or ceramics? The Voice of Things is an exercise in appreciating what is in the moment, without wanting to immortalize it. Embracing new possibilities as the work changes. It is an invitation not to hold on too much, but to accept that things are always in transition.

Cueva, 2019 (excerpt) - Cueva is een videowerk waarin ik de tijd in de amazone onderzoek in relatie tot beweging, het (werk)lichaam, ritme en de natuur. Attempts to sculpt a Movement (2017- heden) - (foto links: Attempts 10-11, diptych 31.4×45.2cm. Rechts: Attempts 04, 22.3x14.7cm) Dit werk komt voort uit een fascinatie voor de tijdelijke vorm van markttenten. De vorm van het zeil, gevormd naar de metalen constructie van de marktkraam, neemt een elegante, sculpturale vorm aan. Ik ben gefascineerd door deze vormen die elke week weer op en afgebouwd worden. In dit werk onderzoek ik met fotografie en klei of ik de ‘beweging’ van het zeil kan nabootsen en kan gebruiken. Ik maak er een abstracte vertaling van. ?Het werk is een poging om een kortstondige beweging, die maar tijdelijk kan bestaan, te kunnen vereeuwigen.
VLOER (2016-heden) - Al sinds 2016 maak ik ruimtelijke composities met verzamelde en nagemaakte objecten in mijn atelier. Deze worden terloops opgebouwd in een opwelling, om vervolgens weer een nieuwe samenstelling te vormen een week later. Het enige blijvende element, is de foto. Het werk dient als oefening in het componeren, om in ‘beweging’ te blijven. Hier een compositie met houten latten, plastic bekertjes en nagemaakte objecten uit gips.
