Lotte Pet (PhD) is a Rotterdam based painter and bioart researcher. Central to her practice is the question of what art can teach us that science cannot. In particular, she is concerned with the role of art in debates about the ethical and socio-cultural implications of biotechnological developments. She sets out to explore the meaning of (intra)relationality between technology and organs, tissues, and cells, and wonders how this impacts our understanding of the human. In her oil paintings, aesthetic elements such as brushstroke and image construction are related to innovative theories in new materialism, biopolitics, Science and Technology Studies, and posthumanism. For her recently completed PhD project "The Excess of Meaning", Lotte Pet investigated how bioart can provide a unique kind of knowledge about living matter alongside bioscientific and bioethical discourses.
