Maaike Canne is a Rotterdam-based (NL) illustrator and visual artist. Inspired by architecture, design, and nature, she creates vibrant, yet serene compositions that offer a new perspective on everyday scenes. Her work often feels slightly nostalgic and has a cinematic charm. As if something just happened and we're only left with this frozen composition to start imagining. Working with media ranging from gouache to digital drawing, she works across editorial, murals, and autonomous paintings. Her bold yet harmonious colour-driven work explores the interplay between interior and exterior spaces, balancing abstraction and representation.

Clients include: The New Yorker, Google, Apple, Pinterest, Dropbox, Architectural Digest, Elle Decoration, De Volkskrant, and VPRO.

**'De Kaai' Rotterdam** - 1 of 4 illustrations for 'De Kaai' De Kaai is a new neighborhood taking shape in Rotterdam-Zuid, on the former grounds of an old margarine factory. Once a closed-off industrial site, it's now being transformed into a vibrant mix of homes, workspaces, and public spaces. This ambitious development marks a new chapter for the city, where history and modern life intertwine. I created a series of illustrations that visualize this transformation, reflecting both the site's industrial heritage and its future as a dynamic urban district. **VPRO Gids** - Illustration for the cover of VPRO Gids. Celebrating Dutch landscape architect Mien Ruys (1904 - 1999).⁣ ⁣ Mien Ruys is not a familiar name to most people. But for architects, artists, and garden enthusiasts, Mien Ruys is an icon. She was the only female landscape architect of her time; a conceptual artist who collaborated with Rietveld, Bonnema, and Mondriaan. She revolutionized the concept of gardens and gardening and was the major inspiration for the internationally renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf.⁣

Alongside the ongoing Smooth Criminals series, featuring unique criminal characters paired with cocktail-inspired brews, I also create standalone label designs for individual releases. Each illustration blends bold visuals with storytelling, tailored to the character and flavour of the beer.

**Mural in Santa Croce di Magliano, Italy** - The mural is part of the broader cultural (S)punti di Vista program by the Embassy and Consulate General of the Netherlands in Italy, in partnership with INWARD – National Observatory on Urban Creativity and cooperation with six UCAS – Urban Creativity Associations. HollAndMe is creating a creative partnership between Holland and Italy to bring dutch street art to six Italian cities. Invited by ACAG – Associazione Culturale Antonio Giordano for the PAG – Premio Antonio Giordano. Times are, and have been, tough for many people. So I desperately wanted to create a soothing and serene piece where we can step into and get away from our daily stressors for a moment. A place where we can reflect on things and dream a little. Influenced by liminal spaces, architecture and nature, this dreamlike mural is depicting the reality in between two worlds. Worlds that live side-by-side, that feel familiar yet surreal at the same time. Thinking in two and three dimensions at once, blending the feeling of both being outside and inside together. Spatial play, perspective and color play a big role in setting the scene.
