Matija Pekić is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in photography and camerawork.
Perplexed by the immense beauty of the world in contrast to the destruction and suffering humans inflict upon it, he critically examines themes that intersect personal memory with the broader, historical impact of humanity on its social and geographical environment.
How do we adapt and find meaning in our changing environment? And how does this shape our memories?
Matija’s work takes shape as fictional philosophical reflections on those themes. Characterised by long takes, naturalistic and atmospheric sequences, he researches formal ways to interpret storytelling through the use of video installations, visual manipulation and experimental filming techniques. Often collaborating with multidisciplinary artists, choreographers and composers he employs improvisation as a method of achieving authenticity.
Born in 1992 in Koprivnica, Croatia, Matija studied BA Photography & Cinematography at Academy Of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb. Upon completing a Master of Arts Photography in 2017 at AKV St.Joost Breda in The Netherlands, he settled and continued his artistic practice in Rotterdam.
