Trained in design, architecture and critical heritage studies, I navigate these intersecting fields through practice-based research, moving fluidly through temporalities and geographies. In 2013, I initiated The Imaginary Agency as a creative platform focusing on the intersections of urban life, environmental justice, and the transformative power of (collective) imagination. Collaborations in Sweden, Mexico, Colombia, Belgium, the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the Netherlands have deeply inspired me, as these showcased the expansion of imaginaries set in motion through creative interventions and affective methodologies. I seek the openings to repair troubled and disrupted relations across generations, landscapes, and more-than-human lifeworlds.

A hint of fugitive times, within and beyond the fences
A hint of fugitive times, within and beyond the fences (2025) - Commissioned essay and poster for an exhibition related to a research project on socio-environmental justice in biofuel transitions imparted at the University of Gothenburg’s School of Global Studies. The essay is an adapted version of a chapter from my 2023 PhD dissertation “Leaving Dry Land: Water, Heritage and Imaginary Agency”. Design with ~ Art Collart.
Leaving Dry Land: Water, Heritage and Imaginary Agency (2023)
Leaving Dry Land: Water, Heritage and Imaginary Agency (2023) - PhD dissertation. Both to sense and make sense of the world, I followed waters in Mexico City and Gothenburg, shapeshifting their way through and across spaces in between things, concepts and places, allowing them to sustain and carry imaginations. Through a framing with a point of departure in critical heritage studies, complemented with insights from critical geography and ecofeminism, I focused on how water functions as both a natural force and a narrative agent, witnessing colonial expeditions, carrying memories, and mediating between seen and unseen histories. I developed a practice-based and affective methodology that moves fluidly across disciplines and temporalities, engaging with historical collections, (urban) landscape transformations, and more-than-human perspectives in cartographic analyses, immersive mapping, interactive performances, and ecocentric storytelling.
Imagining the in-between of land and water (2022)
Imagining the in-between of land and water (2022) - This performance-lecture presented an imaginary journey following waters while wild brews, perfumes and hydrolats brought the narrative alive to all the senses and activated long-term aquatic memories. With Sjamme van de Voort, Maidie van den Bos and more-than-human bodies holding the waters from Jotunheimen to Lake Vänern, along the river Göta into the sea of Kattegat and to the North Sea. At the WATERSCHOOL (Studio Makkink & Bey, Rotterdam NL), on the occasion of the 2022 International Architecture Biennial Rotterdam Waterweek.
As We Float (2022)
As We Float (2022) - The seven pamphlets in this XL cahier can be read as a book, can be taken out to hang on a wall, but first and foremost they can be engaged with as exercises of expanding our imagination and creating attention for the deeply meaningful stories that water carries. Design with Art Collart. Print run 100 copies. Awarded Mooi Marginaal 2020-2021.
This Morning, I Caught you in a Drop on my Finger (2019)
This Morning, I Caught you in a Drop on my Finger (2019) - About the city in time and space — and water, that runs through it all. Publication resulting from a one-year inquiry into relations with water in Mexico City. Design with Art Collart. English-Spanish. Print run 500 copies. Distribution by Idea Books (Self-published). ISBN 978–90–9032281–0.
The Water Carriers
The Water Carriers - Performance in three acts. ACT 1. Wading through a canal, I read the eco-fiction ‘Journey to Atlan’, written by Mauricio Martínez in response to my account of a three-day long walking journey following water in Mexico City. ACT 2. With Sander Huijzer, I constructed a life raft from waste wood based on a scene from ‘Journey to Atlan’ (see Act 1). ACT 3. The life raft became the stage for a water-gathering performance co-created and realised with Ilse Evers, with a guest performance by Sjamme van de Voort. Maidie van den Bos distilled syrups out of flora and rainwater from Mexico City which were served to the audience as part of the performance. Visited by a varied audience, from children to elderly people, from ducks to seagulls.

While the publication of "This morning, I caught you in a drop on my finger" has already been celebrated in Rotterdam, it also has to find its way back to Mexico City. Safe Harbour

Datum:
Locatie: Ministry of Space
In samenwerking met: Institute for Urban Politics (formerly known as the Ministry of Space)

In Belgrade, I will immerse myself in conversations on inhabiting the city in coexistence—on what it means to be and stay human in relations of care across differences. The Institute for Urban Politics set up the Safe Harbour one-month residency as a space for exchange and I hope to learn from the commoning practices of the ‘Don’t Let Belgrade Drown’ protest movement, in which activism and art play essential roles.

This morning, I caught you in a drop on my finger

Datum:
Locatie: Flowers & Sours
In samenwerking met: Art Collart & Maidie van den Bos

To celebrate that the book “En la mañana te recogí en una gota en mi dedo” is ready to start a further life of its own, I organized my ideal Friday drink. In the book, short stories, images, exchanges and experiences from the Netherlands, Mexico and Sweden, together form a bigger narrative about the city in time and space—and Water that flows through it all. In this time of climate change, what can Water tell us about hope for the future?

A drop of water on a hot plate

Datum:
Locatie: Mexico-Stad
In samenwerking met: Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie

Thanks to the support from the Fund for Creative Industries I will engage in socio-spatial research into the water infrastructure in Mexico City, which is under pressure because of urban development. I want to visualize the social consequences of this spatial process and broach the topic of the city's complex water issues among the local more-than-human population.

HORTUS Kleinpolderpleinpark

Datum:
Locatie: Kleindpolderplein
