Yesum Yoon(b.1995) is a South Korean artist creating objects of various scales and creature-like forms. Her works are often weaved together as a visual storytelling of her imaginary landscape. As a cultural nomad, her stories give voice to and greet people living in the permanent flux of closures and openings. Her practice has been recognised through Christian Dior Couture and supported by residencies at Reon, GR, and Instituto, PT. Recent presentations include exhibitions at Brutus, NL, Limassol Art Walk, CY and Jardin des Tuileries, FR.

My work originates from the wish for the dearest, littlest things not to be erased by the world’s overwhelming busyness of life, crowded with ‘very important things to do’. I want these moments to be well-fed by my attention and grow, so they can meet another world and find those capable of loving them. Many of my stories follow scenarios of the ordinary’s resilience and escape from the flood of efficiency, clarity, and elimination of what cannot be grasped, working to find and reclaim the forgotten voices and passages to solidarity. My type of story is not of the grand successes of the ‘hero’ but of a collective of petite voices of caring through daily life, echoing, being connected, and expanding.

These stories extends to chapters such as individuals regaining the their bodies, minds and time - once split and compressed to dance with productivity(Don’t Leave me hanging, 2022); children and adults finding their dream houses together(Who is living in You?, 2022); becoming the fool on a journey(0.The Fool’s Invitation, 2023); and calling to one another to reach each other’s existence(Trivial Planet and Star Telephone, 2024 - ongoing).

Don't Leave Me Hanging (2022)
Don't Leave Me Hanging (2022) - “Don’t Leave Me Hanging” portrays an imaginary landscape of pills suspended in various states. The states can be grouped into two: one symbolizing desperate efforts to connect, belong, and not be missed, so hanging, and the other, though unsure of the outcome, choosing to break the chain and fall out. My research delves into the contemporary use of over-the-counter and nutraceutical pills, examining how their perceived values and promises significantly affect behaviors and lifestyles more than their medicinal properties. People, eager to live fully and actively, turn to these easy-buy medications for quick relief and daily supplements to enhance health and achieve balance. However, relying on these empty promises keeps one in a state of near-burnout - neither fully dead nor alive.
A Portal and Coffins of Buds (2021)
A Portal and Coffins of Buds (2021) - is a performative practice by personal understanding of how we relate to endings and keep connection between the living and the dead. Drawing on elements of Korean mourning rituals, I reinterpreted the traditional practice of serving a meal for the loved ones. This ritual typically involves a communal dinner shared by the living after the farewell. In my version, the ritual becomes more personal and solitary: the mourner invites their departed loved one to share a meal, symbolizing an ongoing, albeit transformed, relationship. The act centers around the tinted stainless steel table, which serves as a portal to the realm of death. In this mirrored space, the viewer can perceive subtle movements of hands sharing food, evoking the intimacy of the once-shared connection. Through this work, I questioned the finality of death. The notion that memories and emotions must end with the physical departure of a loved one, or when it ends it ends, might not be the truth. Instead, without the possibility of transformation〞of defrosting the stagnant state of grief〞mourning will continue to cling and linger. By engaging in the ritual of sharing a meal, the work invites practitioner to consider how we might reinvigorate the relationship between the dead and the living, keeping the essence of connection alive even after loss.

Don't leave me hanging (2022)
Don't leave me hanging (2022) - Swallowing the pill is quite easy yet also absurd. Believing in these tiny 'others' will make the self improve, better, in the society we live in, we take multiple pills for every reason. This work was the imagination of self becoming a pill to be swallowed, so compress and minimize self to be accepted, or to cut out of the chains, be free from the standards and the centers the society already holds and stand for own uniqueness, though it could be daunting.

It is a minor planet, but not an astroid.
Even on this planet which is placed out of the world’s important standards, life exists.
And to the petit bourgeois living a minor life on that planet, this is the whole world.

During my residency at INSTITUTO in Porto, I presented the project , a narrative of the process by which ideas transform and are shared with the audience. In the beginning, my ideas and I existed as a single, unified body〞a collective self in which boundaries were blurred. Then, as time passed in Porto, some of these beings, imbued with newfound vibrancy, chose to move out〞adopting fresh colors and expanding in volume. Their departure was not an act of separation, but a celebration
