Objecten, installatie, Grafiek, Experimenteel, Design, cross-over

With a curiosity for materials and various making techniques, Myeonga Seo examines everyday objects and domestic spaces. Her practice centers on observing both familiar and unfamiliar elements within objects, highlighting the subtle details that reveal traces of craftsmanship and the making process. Myeonga Seo (b. 1998) is a Korean designer based in the Netherlands, graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2024.

Ornamental Folds
Ornamental Folds - This project explores a new method of crafting sheet metal, giving a soft, ornamental appearance to objects which contrasts with typical metal furniture. Industrial production often uses complex machinery to bend metal sheets, limiting design possibilities. Metal sheets can also be folded using small cuts along folding lines, eliminating the need for specialised bending machines. Freed from the limitations of bending machines, new design possibilities open up. Different proportions as well as curved and organic lines become possible. Rather than cutting simple dotted lines, Seo and Marie developed decorative demarcations. The cuts become three dimensional by folding, giving an ornamental look to the edges. Industrial metal fabrication, digital design tools and laser cutting come together to propose new craft possibilities. Collaboration with Marie Kolářová
Colors of Welding
Colors of Welding - Colors of Welding explores the overlooked aesthetics of welding and reveals the traces left by welders behind metal objects. The project celebrates the beauty of tig welding on stainless steel, where heat naturally creates iridescent hues—subtle blues, purples, and golds that typically get polished away during production. These traces, however, are evidence of craftsmanship—the human presence behind sleek, industrial forms. The coloration of each weld is influenced by factors like temperature, gas, and welding speed, making every weld unique. Weld marks are everywhere around us: on chairs, tables, stair railings, and even in public transport—quietly shaping our environments without recognition. As a designer, I am drawn to the hidden narratives of everyday objects. I believe it’s important to acknowledge the people and processes behind what we consume. Colors of Welding project highlights the skill, labor, and quiet artistry embedded in the making of furniture.
Branch Becomes
Branch Becomes - A log becomes a table, a branch becomes a hanger, a trunk becomes a bench... The displayed furnitures result from our interaction with the forest : the found trunks and branches entirely guide the designs, the techniques, the postures, and the dimensions. Playfully assembled, the parts are connected with simple standardised elements, in order to alter as little as possible the findings. Each detail, from the curve of a branch, to the marks of woodworms on the skin, are traces of the relationship of a tree within the canopy. These traces define unique features, that often disappear in the process of standardisation of wood. « A branch becomes... » questions the disappearance of form and texture in the furniture industry, when the industrialised methods modify our perception of « natural » materials such as wood. By opening up to the rawness and imperfection of the findings, a dialogue with the forest enters the domestic space. Collaboration with Marie Le Gars
Bohemian Crystal
Bohemian Crystal - In most Czech households, including those of Marie Kolářová’s grandparents, treasured handmade glassware is stored in cabinets and reserved for special occasions. However, rising energy costs and declining demand now threaten this traditional craft, rooted in the country’s rich glassmaking heritage. Marie and Seo collaborate on reimagining this endangered art by repurposing leftover sheet glass to create a collection of nesting vases. They hand-cut traditional patterns into the glass using a diamond grindstone, blending these timeless motifs with contemporary rectangular forms that suit modern interiors. By collaborating closely with craftsmen local to the Šumava mountains, Marie and Seo aim to preserve this cultural legacy, adapting it for a new generation that values sustainability alongside artistry. Embellished Edges

There was a time, before the onset of industrialisation, when ornamentation defined the beauty of crafted objects, weaving artistry into the everyday—from grand architectural structures to the most personal belongings. Craftspeople shaped intricate patterns and rich textures, lending a sensory depth to the world around them. Yet, with the rise of industry, ornamentation grew subdued; things became uniform, and the unexpected nuances of ornament were gradually lost.

Dutch Design Week '22 at Van Abbe Museum.

As a designer, exhibiting your work at a major design event requires a big financial investment, and relies heavily on your network. For the majority of starting designers, no matter how talented, this makes exhibiting at a design festival out of reach. 1m2 Collective has set out to visualise this problem and provide a solution by fitting as many designers as possible into just 1m2 of ground space.

The smallest expo with the biggest impact!
