In the Courtyards of Men (2026)
In the Courtyards of Men (2026) - Within the border town of Hoek van Holland, near my childhood home. Between daily trails and dog parks, there are a myriad of bunkers and relics of a not-so-distant past as a garrison town. First, the Atlantic wall and later stationing American soldiers during the Cold War. During the Second World War, my great-grandmother fled the bombings in Rotterdam on foot. Taking shelter in one of the older bunkers, left deserted. A hundred years later, homeless work migrants and refugees reused the ruins as temporary homes. Some went through the Westlands ' exploitation of migrant workers, others were waiting for the chance to cross on the boat departing for England, illegally. While the municipality pushes the mementoes of the garrison town away, to frame Hoek van Holland as a surfing spot. International affairs have always been a centre point for the town, hence the reason it has existed. Some Bunkers supposedly might even have housed Nuclear Bombs, which they still are being denied to this day. The technological and architectural relics are partially preserved, and despite being hidden away, continue to be fully present. After a short conversation with my roommate during my early academy years, living in Rotterdam, I noticed we had two completely different perspectives on the town. Unaware of the historical nature of the bunkers, she had grown up narrating the area with a lighthearted playfulness, while the bunkers had terrified me in my youth. Most of the town is built around the ruins of the bunker network, stretching out underground, reaching the other coastal towns. Few people knew the trails. Hoek van Holland never seems to know whether to highlight the ruins or avoid the bricks between the dunes. Their violent past confronts many families, but municipalities treat the bricks as an exotic sight and city planning preserves a few of their original weight. A garrison is a body of troops stationed in a particular location, originally to guard it and/or facilities that constitute a military base or fortified military headquarters. A garrison is usually in a city, town, fort, castle, ship, or similar site. "Garrison town" is a common expression for any town that has a military base nearby. Light follows three different paths to reach us (2026)
Light follows three different paths to reach us (2026) - A pendulum stands centrally in a furniture-jammed space, acting as a carrier of a melodic sound that fills the gaps still left empty. The pendulum is a narrator of the turning of the Earth, as well as a vessel for the physicality of sound. The space serves as a vacuum for introspection. The work uses ambience to narrate my view on entropy – the disorder and order of matter. Even while this disorder and order is structured, everything is tuned in perfect balance. Entropie (2024)
Entropie (2024) - A work that is reliant on its temporary structure to keep balance. Showcasing the fragile balance of time and space. Scattered pieces of identity without a body to fully exist. Leaving an imprint. -The final rendition is made with polyamide clay.
