Based in Rotterdam, Chester is a transdisciplinary artist, designer, and researcher whose work spans various creative fields. His practice is driven by 'autonomous knowledge' - both as a process and an objective. By challenging the authority of existing frameworks of knowledge, he engages in continuous re-experimentation and re-application, seeking to uncover the unknown through direct interaction. This approach allows him to constantly reassess his relationship with his surroundings, exploring the shifting boundaries between self, art, and environment.

Departing Shore - Afbeeldinge van ‘t begin der MAES tot VOC-KAMER ROTTERDAM
Departing Shore - Afbeeldinge van ‘t begin der MAES tot VOC-KAMER ROTTERDAM - The project is a collaboration with Ping-Fan Chiang on Taiwanese religious practice and hidden Dutch colonial history. If the lost Dutch souls of Penghu were to return to Rotterdam—Europe's largest deep-water port, laden with offerings and goods from the Far East—would they still be able to find their way home? Over the past four hundred years, changes in the natural environment and man-made projects wiped the former coastline away, the old shipping lanes are unrecognisable, and the nautical charts on which they relied are long out of date. Chester then imagined himself as wandering souls washed ashore by the tide. With the sky as his eyes and his feet as brushes, he stumbled from the coast, guided by memory. he walked inland along the banks of the Maas, finally reaching the original site of the Rotterdam East India Company [VOC] chamber. There, he mapped out the city, marking the site as the place where the wandering souls can finally unload their trade goods and find rest.

iPhone
iPhone - The space we inhabit in the world, including all details of our personal lives, has been transferred to the communication devices we possess. Our cellphone has become a miniaturized, independent existence, a container of spaces that are full of multiple functionalities and obscure complexities. The drawing of Hsiang Ching Chuang illustrates a fantastical interpretation of the functions on the iPhone. Not only the disconnectedness between interior functionalities and outer appearance of the device is shown. The drawing also expresses how human beings try to understand the complexities of frightful technology, by using a metaphorical language.

This November, we invite teens aged 12-19 to join an intensive, "Research by Doing" urban workshop.

In samenwerking met: 'Departing Shore' is a collaboration between Ping-Fan Chiang and Chester Chuang. The assignment was commissioned by Ghosts in the Foreign Land project.

If the lost Dutch souls of Penghu returned to Rotterdam, they’d find an unrecognizable home—its coastline reshaped, old shipping lanes erased. With ancient charts invalidated, they trace their memories, walking along the Maas as GPS records their route—not with ink and pen, but with footsteps and signals. Chester imagined himself as these wandering souls, retracing their journey to the original VOC chamber, marking a place where they could finally unload their trade goods and rest.
