Rachel Caruana is a Maltese artist currently living and working in Rotterdam. Her practice centres around an ongoing body of mixed-media paintings that explore the relationship between internal processes and physical expression. Originally emerging from an investigation into physical surrender, her work employs bodily gestures as a “silent language” to communicate experiences that exist beyond words. Her work shifts between different lenses, embracing perspectives of curiosity, self-reflection, and healing, as well as a nostalgic, child-like outlook, welcoming spontaneity and play. By deliberately omitting facial features, she directs the viewer’s attention entirely to the form and gestures of the body, creating a space for a more universal connection, inviting viewers to engage with the work on an emotional level, free from the influence of individual identity

Still from Plastic Free July- Digital Billboard Exhibition by LeGoodSociety. - About the Work: Disposable reflects on the fragility of identity in an era of mass consumption and emotional detachment. Through this work I explore how disposability extends beyond the material, touching lives, identities and bodies. The subject matter calls into question what, or who is deemed valuable in a system that prizes convenience over connection.

Graduation Project: All the Ways I can Fall (2024)
Graduation Project: All the Ways I can Fall (2024) - Figuratively or literally, it seems as if life is always finding a way of throwing us off balance, and I have recently become aware of how intently I resist this force…but at what cost? Initially inspired by the comparison of human existence to a perpetual dance with gravity; a tangible reference to a struggle against imbalance, which mirrored the physical manifestation of my own efforts to control and navigate life’s metaphorical pitfalls, the physical act of 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥ing quickly emerged as the perfect expression and metaphor. In exploring falling as a learned skill, particularly within the context of dance, and engaging in intentional 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥s, the act of 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥ing evolved into a personal symbol of release. Embracing 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥ing came to signify the pursuit of freedom, highlighting a new paradox where surrendering control, (in this case to gravity), was not only acceptable but beneficial, as the disorientation inherent in 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥ing held potential for positive change. This collection of paintings portrays this journey and serves to invoke a moment of reflection for those who engage with it.
