Director/composer Robin Coops (NL, 1988) creates immersive operas and other music-driven works. Although his projects are deeply contemporary, cross-disciplinary and make use of digital technologies, the human voice and body remain the key elements of his work. Tactile, mesmerising and uncanny at times, Robin’s projects address themes such as order vs. chaos, the fear and desire to loose control and multiperspectivity.

All The Pleasures
All The Pleasures - All the Pleasures is a performance, installation, and album I created, inspired by the songs of 17th-century English composer Henry Purcell. Themes of night, sensuality, and desire are reimagined in a nocturnal blend of voices, cello, and electronics. My collaboration with cellist-producer René van Munster began during the 2020 pandemic, sparked by the timelessness of Purcell’s sensual lyrics. We exchanged ideas and recordings remotely. All the Pleasures transcends genre boundaries, showing that Purcell’s texts belong just as much in a 17th-century opera as they do in a contemporary club setting. The performance unfolds in a hypnotic, immersive environment. DONS
DONS - What does masculinity mean in 2025? With my club opera DONS, I challenge traditional ideas about gender roles. In a society where narratives are shaped by political and commercial interests, I invite audiences to let go of entrenched gender norms and embrace a fluid, authentic way of being. In May 2025, I spent eight days working on a preliminary study, which resulted in a first presentation on 23 and 24 May at Space for Dance Art. During this research, I explored several dance themes: the unconscious man who did not realise his role, the anxious man who did not know how to take a stand, the confused man beset by gloom, the fluid man who let go of fixed role patterns, and the man who reverted to gender norms of the past. In this clash between progress and regression, I placed the audience at the centre of the experience—not in a classical theatre setting, but in a club space where the boundaries between performer and spectator are blurred. DONS unfolds in this club setting, where the audience moves freely through a sonic and visual world that confronts, questions, and invites reflection. Nicholas Thayer's music weaves together elements of Mozart's Don Giovanni with dark electronic beats and deep synthesizers, forming an immersive soundscape that is both classic and innovative. DONS expects to premiere in full during theatre season 26-27. Producer: ICK Dans Amsterdam Co-producer: Coops&Co Direction & Concept: Robin Coops Choreography: Emio Greco | Pieter C. Scholten Composer: Nicholas Thayer Costumes: Clifford Portier Dancers: ICK Ensemble and ICK-Next (Junior Company) Singers: Arnout Lems and David Whitwell
Harmonia
Harmonia - "Exoplanets” is a series of (mini) albums and concerts presented by Sage, an AI guide who shares information through music about different planets, each representing its own utopia or dystopia. Exoplanets 3: Harmonia is a free adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four. It tells the story of a small town where the inhabitants only sing to one another. Winston, a teacher of the “Sing Speak Book,” begins receiving small messages suggesting that the sacred song texts are not liberating, but rather a prison of the mind. Winston starts truly listening and speaking, but when the “Sing Police” find out, he is sung back into society. Harmonia is both an album and an AI-generated music film, centered on the theme of manipulative systems and the stories we tell each other and ourselves. With AI, we create stories for better or worse, consciously, but also unconsciously. The narrative therefore contributes to the question of how we want to use AI in the future. For this film, made in 2023–2024, I deliberately made use of the slowness of the medium at that time and chose an aesthetic that feels tangible and is very difficult to achieve through other forms of film making.
Ghost Towns (work in progress)
Ghost Towns (work in progress) - What do we leave behind? As time passes, these questions grow louder. Ghost Towns is my upcoming augmented reality concert exploring transience, community, and legacy, inspired by my journey to ghost towns such as Pyramiden, an abandoned Soviet settlement near the North Pole.
The Saga of Sage – The Missions
The Saga of Sage – The Missions - The Saga of Sage is one of the first Metaverse-music projects that will allow a global audience to engage with a metaverse concert, both with and without VR-glasses. This opens an unprecedented audience potential. Each mission in the series is created with a new guest visual and musical artist. The Saga of Sage is a transmedia art project told through different projects and disciplines. Sage’s explorations are told through the graphic novel series Exoplanets, the intergalactic radio station Utopia and the virtual concert series The Missions (in co-production with WeMakeVR). This second mission was a collaboration with het Nieuwe Luxor theater in Rotterdam. Orphée | l'Amour | Eurydice - In this version of the myth, Orpheus and Eurydice are not separated by death, but by a fate that strikes many present-day relationships: the lovers have lost each other along the way. They don’t communicate directly anymore, only via text messages with L’Amour, the personification of love, who in turn is at a loss how to properly fulfill they role as a mediator. Using theatre and VR technology, Coops and Changa let the audience experience the story from three different perspectives: Orpheus’, Eurydice’s, and L’Amour’s, captured in three short performances, which can be experienced either separately or together. Gluck’s music is transformed by Dutch-Polish composer Zbigniew Wolny into an intimate and colorful arrangement for tenor, guitar, and electronics. Deine Winterreise - M31 Foundation & OPERA2DAY present Franz Schubert‘s song cycle Winterreise as a video-opera walk through The Hague. Along the route, there are QR codes with which the visitor can open a film clip on his own smartphone with a song from the cycle, performed by baritone Martijn Cornet and pianist Shuann Chai. Each song becomes an audiovisual poem that enters into a dialogue with the streets, squares, and parks of the city. In the songs, a young man tries to regain his balance on foot after a lonely time of distance and alienation. The visitor of Deine Winterreise literally walks with him, experiences the comfort of unforgettable music, and may – just like the singer – at the end of the journey, let go of the inner winter and dream of a new beginning.
