Sasha Herman

Media, film, Audiovisueel

As an artist and stop motion animator I use old fashioned film making techniques and pre cinematic apparatus's to make my works. My aim is to use simple and found materials and combine them with these techniques to create the 'persistence of vision' which magically transforms a series of static images into ones that seem to be moving of their own accord. It is easy to forget that there was a time before moving images and that when they were first produced moving images were a huge novelty. Seeing static images come to life for the first time must have filled people with wonder and intrigue. My mission as an artist is to create experimental humorous art that enables an audience to feel that same wonder and intrigue by showing them moving images in a way that they have not experienced before.

BROADCATS!
BROADCATS! - BROADCASTS! Is a project created for and during outdoor film festival Pluk de Nacht 2024. During the ten days of the festival along side any member of the public who wanted to take part I animated cardboard faces using recorded messages I had gathered from people on the festival site. Each evening the animation made until that point was screened before the main feature.
Onzichtbaar Verlies - This is a workshop I gave during Onzichtbaar Verlies, an exhibition set up by a bereaved mother whose artist daughter had died due to her epilepsy. During my workshop members of the public were able to try stop motion animation using a cardboard face with replacable eyes and mouths so that it was able to speak. It took place at Beautiful Distress an art space in Amsterdam.
Musing on Epilepsy - Animated short in which the artist describes his experience of having an epileptic seizure.
One in One Hundred - One in One Hundred is an animated short giving a voice to people with epilepsy. This video is a proof of concept made during my Master in Animation at the AKV St Joost which I graduated from in September 2023.
Collageoscoping - Collageoscoping is an animated technique similar to rotoscoping where video stills are traced over using materials such as ripped cardboard, broken ceramics or feathers to create a rough reproduction of the original image. When these stills are edited together they create an animation that though rough, imitates the lifelike movements of the original video. These animals are collageoscoped from Eadweard Muybridges Animal Locomotion series.
Make Animation - Make animation is a project commissioned by Pluk de Nacht film festival during which I held stop motion animation workshops during each day of the festival, the results of which were shown each evening before the main feature.
Élan Vital - Élan Vital is a multi screen animated installation contemplating the difference between what we ‘see’ and what we ‘observe’ when watching animation. The film experiments with different techniques, including green screen, cellular and stop motion animation. Élan Vital has been exhibited multiple times as an installation and screened at various film festivals.

One in One Hundred

ONE IN ONE HUNDRED (in production) is an animated project which is focused on people who live with epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder experienced by more than one in every hundred people globally and yet many people know little about it beyond generalizations and cliches. Through One in One hundred I am giving a voice to those affected by the condition and offering them a platform on which they can tell their story.
