Simone Schuffelen is a performance and visual artist, made in Zuid-Limburg and based in Rotterdam.
With a generous dose of humor, she presents her reflections on current times and societal structures through performances, interventions, and installations. Moving through the world as a playful instigator, she approaches reality through the lens of absurdity. Not to critique, but to mirror its strangeness.
The core of this subtle disruption of reality comes from her upbringing in the carnival tradition of the South of the Netherlands. Growing up surrounded by ritual, satire, role reversal and collective celebration, she experienced early on how humor and exaggeration can temporarily shift perspectives and social structures. This spirit of carnival still runs through her work, where theatricality and playful distortion allow reality to slightly tilt and reveal its strange and human edges.
She currently lives and works in Rotterdam, where she is co-founder of VLAK project space. Her work has been performed and exhibited at venues such as Paradiso in Amsterdam, WORM in Rotterdam, and SCHUNCK in Heerlen. In 2021, she was awarded the Hermine van Bers Beeldende Kunstprijs, recognizing her growing impact within the contemporary art scene of Limburg.

FUTURE PERSPECTIVES
Future Perspectives, The Ram’s Horn Trumpet Will Sound Again is een tentoonstelling met zes jonge, regionale kunstenaars.
During her residency at De Fabriek, Schuffelen explores the illusion of set design and painting, inspired by 18th-century theatre panels. Handmade and collected set pieces are brought together with personal objects such as vinyl records, carnival costumes, and furniture. Her urge to collect serves both as a driving force and a source of inspiration. These elements come to life in a theatrical presentation, with the audience playing a subtle supporting role.
