As a visual artist and anthropologist, Sofie Blom (NL 1999) explores the lifeworlds of the human and the more-than-human, and their interactions. Her work drapes veils of romance over the daily to open up an area of possibility where beauty and emotion are deployed critically. Moving between fieldwork, archival research and poetic speculation, she traces subtle connections and tensions within encounters.

Riverlands - Together Forever

The Drowned Lands follows a researcher searching for traces of drowned villages in Zeeland, the Netherlands. Speculating on how the sea functions as an archive, the work follows attempts to develop Super 8 film with bladderwrack seaweed and fix images with salt until they fade again. Mud reveals relics only if one waits long enough. Further down the coastline in Normandy, in The Church That Slips, salt marshes and mudflats turn into cliffs of chalk, flint, and sandstone. Here, mysterious inland streams slowly carry a thousand-year-old church back toward high tide. While plans are made to place the church and cemetery on rails and move them inland, a buried pianist longs for his bones to be washed clean by the sea. Moving from the perspective of a researcher, fieldnotes slowly drift into fantasy the longer we spend time with these landscapes. The work explores how imagination can function as a method of encounter: not to extract knowledge from a landscape, but to enter into relation with it. It speculates on how prolonged attention alters perception; how, in places where imagination is needed to encounter what once was and still lingers, bones begin to surface and seemingly dead meadows begin to move. Slowly, the possibility opens that further down the coastline in Normandy, high tide longs for the church to return to its arms, and buried bones still desire travel overseas. Through field recordings of eroding cliffs, plant-based film development, seaweed contact prints, and speculative narration, the project approaches landscape as an active and unstable presence. As the landscapes erode, so does the boundary between fieldwork and fiction, observation and participation, representation and material encounter. The films move between ethnography, sensory cinema, and ecogothic storytelling, opening a space where more-than-human temporalities begin to speak.
Riverlands
Riverlands - Link: https://vimeo.com/1141077506?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci Wachtwoord: Merwede2025 Riverlands is a fantasy essay that explores the presence of the forever chemical PFAS in the river Merwede, which has poisoned the land, its fruits, and generations of breast milk. Diving into these waters, the film encounters whispers of floods that reshaped the land, of life and love born from the river, and of a mysterious cherry tree growing on its banks. Using family footage and local archives, Riverlands tells the story of generations moving with the tides and the tales passed back and forth within these streams. The sensory qualities embedded in their materiality—together with the intimate viewpoints and emotional memories carried by family footage—at moments grow estranged and distant, as they are refracted through the filmmaker’s dual perspective as both author and viewer. In this shifting dynamic, the archival images become raw material for speculation and conceptualization. Through a lyrical, essayistic voice and an anthropological sensitivity to the materials at hand, the filmmaker explores her evolving relationship to the archives she gathers and reanimates, seeking a narrative mode—and a calibrated distance—capable of sustaining the stories she hopes to set back in motion. -By Tang Hongfeng
Alleen de Havens zijn ons Trouw
Alleen de Havens zijn ons Trouw - Link film: https://vimeo.com/856166572?fl=ip&fe=ec&share=copy Alleen de Havens zijn ons Trouw is about the search for belonging in Rave culture, resulting in a collage of images and thoughts floating by, without aspiring a comprehending narrative. The film contemplates the desire to drown in the nightlife of Rotterdam and the need to oppose the rational structures of daily life, all the whilst escaping grey academic theory by using film. As in film, on the dancefloor everything can be smoothed out. Sometimes it feels as if you are dancing in slow motion. This transcendent feeling on the dancefloor stays forever; a home that does not perish with time. And of course, it is fabricated. Artificial. But does that make it any less real?
