The Transmission Diaries (2025–ongoing) ~ BAK basis voor actuele kunst (2025), Fenix Museum (2026)
The Transmission Diaries (2025–ongoing) ~ BAK basis voor actuele kunst (2025), Fenix Museum (2026) - The Transmission Diaries develops through transmissions across time, space, and institutional contexts, where each iteration stages the movement of experiences, memories, and narratives as they are carried, interrupted, and altered. It works through fragments, interruptions, repetitions, and delays, where what is transmitted can shift, fragment, or return altered. Each iteration takes shape in relation to its context, sometimes addressing a distant self, at other times beginning from the space itself and its conditions, remaining open and adjusting to different situations while holding on to the possibility of contact across distance. It began with a childhood video recorded during a kindergarten ceremony, where a small glitch in the footage became a point of departure, raising the question of whether this break could function as a point of contact across time. In its first public iteration, presented in 2025 at BAK, basis vooractual kunst during its transition into BAK Basecamp, the work took the form of a video and spatial installation in the auditorium, where a table, chairs, and displaced seating elements from the institution were arranged alongside the video and sound, allowing viewers to sit, read, and return to the glitch as a point from which to communicate with a past self.
Where Do We Go When We Are Not Here? (2025–ongoing)
Where Do We Go When We Are Not Here? (2024–ongoing) - An ongoing artistic research that takes the form of a (guide) book, bringing together acts, chapters, and interludes that move between memory, fiction, and critical reflection. Through speculative storytelling, the book asks how worlds marked by instability, fragmentation, and hostility are inhabited, and how other forms of presence might be imagined under conditions of absence, exclusion, or erasure. Engaging the glitch as a method through interruption, refusal, and openness, the writing resists closure and linearity while drawing on lived experience alongside theoretical and literary references. Produced in 2025 as my Final Research Document for the MAFA program at HKU Utrecht School of the Arts, the book was presented within The Transmission Diaries at BAK basis voor actuele kunst during its transition into Basecamp for Tactical Imaginaries.
Performing Sazmanab at de Appel ~ de Appel, Amsterdam (2025)
Performing Sazmanab at De Appel ~ De Appel, Amsterdam (2025) - A quiet intervention within De Appel's library, where a slideshow of bookshelves from my now-closed art space Sazmanab in Tehran is projected onto the existing shelves. By layering one archive onto another, it traces what remains, what is lost, and what resists disappearance, treating the library as a site of memory, transmission, and ongoing presence.
Performing Casco ~ Casco Art Institute, Utrecht (2024)
Performing Casco ~ Casco Art Institute, Utrecht (2024) - An experiential workshop inviting participants to engage with Casco Art Institute through movement and sensory exploration. Guided prompts encouraged slowing down and attending to details often overlooked, using the body as an instrument of perception. Through improvisational exercises, the workshop traced shifting boundaries between self and environment, foregrounding how space acts on bodies as much as bodies act within space. As individual and collective gestures unfolded, temporary connections emerged, reconfiguring the institution not as a fixed structure but as a living, mutable field of relations.
Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy ~ uqbar Berlin (2022) and philomena+, Vienna (installation view, 2024)
Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy ~ uqbar Berlin (2022) and philomena+, Vienna (2024) - An ongoing conversation space presented as an Iranian pharmacy, co-run with artist Anahita Razmi, unfolding as a large installation filled with carefully reproduced Iranian pharmaceuticals and medication packaging that mimic everyday displays while questioning who produces, distributes, and trusts these objects. Emerging in the aftermath of a global pandemic, the work traces unequal trade infrastructures, legal obstacles, and disparities in access to medicine between the Global North and the Global South, while exploring artistic strategies of copying, substitution, and display as tools to unsettle power embedded in health economies. Shown in multiple contexts between 2022 and 2024 through installations, objects, talks, and public exchanges, it invited reflection on care, circulation, and the fragile authority of systems of healing and trade.
Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy (medication package replicas)
Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy (medication packages, originals vs. replicas) - Replicas of Iranian medication packaging produced for Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy, used as part of the installations.
Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy (billboard) — philomena+, Vienna (2024)
Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy (billboard) ~ philomena+, Vienna (2024) - Billboard installed as part of Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy, Vienna, posing the question of the relationship between a pharmacy and an art space in multiple languages.
Talks Programme at Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy ~ uqbar projectspace, Berlin (2022)
Talks Programme at Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy ~ uqbar projectspace, Berlin (2022) - A public talks program developed as part of Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy at uqbar, Berlin, bringing together artists, researchers, and practitioners to reflect on care, circulation, regulation, and power within medical, economic, and institutional systems. The program included contributions by Bahar Noorizadeh and Yasamin Ghalehnoie, Arjun Appadurai, Tahir Amin, and Dr. Arash Jenabian.
Read-in at Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy ~ philomena+, Vienna (2024)
Read-in at Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy ~ philomena+, Vienna (2024) - A situated reading practice developed by the collective Read-in in conversation with Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy, exploring intersections between health care, reading, and embodied knowledge. Interwoven with somatic exercises, the Read-in invited collective reflection on how bodies are regulated within systems and institutions, with particular attention to the relationships between library, prescription, and pharmacy. Led by Annette Krauss and Serena Lee.
Rls % Alc (2020–2021)
Rls % Alc (2020–2021) - Developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, this project began with the collection of paper receipts from groceries delivered to my apartment between 2020 and 2021. Each receipt was sprayed with alcohol-based hand sanitiser, stored for varying periods, and scanned before the ink and paper faded. The work reflects a period of uncertainty shaped by economic instability and the rapid depreciation of the Iranian Rial, carrying material traces of everyday survival during the pandemic. A selection of scans was later produced as a limited-edition zine by Tehran Zine and launched in Tehran alongside images and sounds from my apartment, a space that no longer existed by the time I moved to the Netherlands. Since then, the zine has been presented at multiple international art book fairs.
Rabt (2020–ongoing)
Rabt (2020–ongoing) - A collaborative platform initiated in Tehran in 2020 with Golnoosh Heshmati, working across disciplines with a focus on sound and collective forms of research and engagement. Between 2020 and 2025, Rabt operated as a physical space in Tehran, hosting events, workshops, residencies, and gatherings. After our move to the Netherlands in 2023, Rabt continued through shared facilitation. In 2025, it transitioned into a fully nomadic form, with activities in Tehran and its growing library and archive hosted by Tehran Limits in Lashgarak. Rabt continues as a moving platform that connects communities through shared practices, with sound at its center.
The Other Apartment (2019−now) − Tehran, Mattress Factory Pittsburgh (installation view, 2019)
The Other Apartment (2019–ongoing) ~ Museum of Sohrab, Tehran / Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh (2019) - A long-term project with Jon Rubin that began with the one-to-one duplication of my apartment in Tehran within the exhibition space of the Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh, realized through remote instructions, measurements, and exchanges across borders. Using copying as both method and condition, it foregrounds how domestic space, intimacy, and memory are displaced, mediated, and reassembled through distance. While the physical installation concluded in 2020, The Other Apartment continues as an evolving constellation of video, sound, writing, publishing, and collaborative projects that reflect on migration, mediation, and the unstable relationship between originals, replicas, and lived presence.
The Other Apartment (2019)
The Other Apartment (2019–2020) - The duplication took shape through prolonged attention to minor details and everyday decisions: how weight, texture, wear, and proportion could be approximated without ever fully matching the original. Gaps, substitutions, and moments of uncertainty were not corrected but accumulated, allowing difference to register quietly within the copy. Rather than producing a seamless replica, the process revealed duplication as a fragile, negotiated practice shaped by misalignment, trust, and the slow labor of trying to get close without arriving. Dual images: 1. Original shelving unit from the Tehran apartment (left) and its replica produced in Pittsburgh (right). 2. Original studio heater from the Tehran apartment (left) and its replica produced in Pittsburgh (right).
The Silence − Tehran, Mattress Factory Pittsburgh (2019)
The Silence ~ Museum of Sohrab, Tehran / Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh (2019) - A collaborative exhibition developed as part of The Other Apartment, triggered by the unexpected appearance of a DIY cassette tape on a bookshelf in the Pittsburgh installation. Left anonymously by the lead singer of the Mexican band Para Decir Adioss, the tape became the sole material and conceptual anchor for the project. Musicians in Pittsburgh and Tehran were invited to visit the apartment and perform cover versions of the songs on the cassette, with each performance filmed and screened in the room where it was recorded. Presented simultaneously across the duplicated apartments, the work unfolded through video, sound, and circulating cassette tapes, transforming a chance gesture into a translocal exhibition reflecting on intimacy, circulation, and the quiet movement of culture across distance.
Museum of Sohrab (2019–now)
Museum of Sohrab (2019–ongoing) - An alter ego that takes the form of a living, continuously shifting museum. Museum of Sohrab gathers personal possessions, documents, and objects alongside memories and affective traces that extend beyond the body into the spaces I inhabit. Between 2019 and 2023, the museum was housed in my former apartment in downtown Tehran, functioning as a house museum where every item was catalogued, mapped, and made accessible online through a dedicated database. Extending beyond a fixed site, the project unfolds through duplication, digital archiving, design experiments, and performative moments in which distinctions between self and space, private and public, archive and exhibition blur. Rather than a stable institution, Museum of Sohrab operates as a moving one, continuously expanding through lived environments, copied spaces, and ongoing acts of self-archiving.
Performing Sazmanab at the Electric Room ~ Dastan's Electric Room, Tehran (2018)
Performing Sazmanab at the Electric Room ~ Dastan's Electric Room, Tehran (2018) - A re-presentation of Sazmanab through a scaled reconstruction of the space installed inside Dastan's Electric Room in Tehran. As part of an ongoing practice of translating Sazmanab into other contexts, it transformed fragments of the archive and spatial logic of the platform into a condensed form. By situating Sazmanab within another exhibition space, it reflected on portability, memory, and the ways artist-run infrastructures persist through repetition, adaptation, and reactivation.
Super Sohrab (2009–now) ~ Lifting Workshop with Super Sohrab at Centre Pompidou, Paris (2019)
Super Sohrab (2009–ongoing) ~ Super Sohrab at Centre Pompidou, Paris (2019) - Super Sohrab is a long-term alter ego present in my life and practice since 2009, appearing through performance, video, comics, writing, and public actions. Conceived as a superhero without extraordinary powers, Super Sohrab operates within everyday situations to navigate questions of agency, visibility, and resistance. The alter ego emerged from a desire to take control of my body and to reclaim public space, using humor, failure, and excess not as spectacle but as methods for testing how power circulates and how empowerment remains unstable, provisional, and performative. Through actions such as symbolic weightlifting workshops, arm-wrestling with strangers, and episodic narratives developed through The Adventures of Super Sohrab, vulnerability and strength coexist, and heroism is redefined as something fragile, repetitive, and deeply human.
Arm-Wrestling with Super Sohrab (2013–ongoing)
Arm-Wrestling with Super Sohrab (2013–ongoing) - A recurring performative action carried out through the alter ego Super Sohrab, in which arm-wrestling becomes a public encounter. Framed as both invitation and challenge, the act transforms a simple test of strength into a social situation where power, vulnerability, humour, and failure are negotiated in real time. Repeated across different contexts, it uses the body as a site of encounter, testing ideas of masculinity, agency, and resistance through direct, temporary contact with others.
The Adventures of Super Sohrab (2011–ongoing)
The Adventures of Super Sohrab (2011–ongoing) - An ongoing video and comic series that returns to moments from the alter ego's past. The first video episode takes place entirely inside my former apartment, following Super Sohrab through everyday routines such as cooking, washing dishes, doing laundry, reading, and spending time online, placing a superhero figure within the rhythms of domestic life. A later video chapter, produced in 2022, revisits a photograph taken in 2011 of Super Sohrab standing in front of Freedom Square (Azadi Square) in Tehran. Re-enacted a decade later as video and accompanied by a slowed-down version of the original theme music. It reflects on repetition, memory, and the shifting meanings of past gestures over time.
The Adventures of Super Sohrab: Heroism and Patronage The Summit (2011)
The Adventures of Super Sohrab: Heroism and Patronage The Summit (2011) - A comic book from The Adventures of Super Sohrab that follows the alter ego through encounters with borders, visas, and bureaucratic obstruction. Drawing directly from my own experiences, it depicts Super Sohrab leaving Tehran after the takeover of the UK embassy and applying for a visa from a neighboring country, only to face rejection.
Sazmanab (2008–now)
Sazmanab (2008–ongoing) - An artist-run curatorial platform I founded in Tehran in 2008, now based in Rotterdam, Sazmanab initially operated from my apartment in Tehran and later evolved into a three-floor institution, and then into a roaming space for exhibitions, workshops, residencies, talks, and collective experimentation. Sazmanab emerged as a response to limited access to institutional resources, prioritizing informal exchange, self-organization, and dialogue across artistic disciplines. Over time, it developed into a long-term infrastructure for artistic production and research, supporting local and international artists while continuously adapting its format, location, and methods. Rather than functioning as a fixed venue, Sazmanab operates as a flexible framework shaped by context, collaboration, and the conditions of its moment. − Image: Sazmanab during the Dutch Art Institute and Werkplaats Typografie program in Tehran, led by Doreen Mende and Kodwo Eshun (The Otolith Group), 2014.
