I make paintings and/or drawings inspired by moments and places that have left an impression on me. I like to think that observing the world with a pencil or a brush in hand offers the possibility to have a fresh perspective on things – a slower, more deliberate way of seeing; a form of resistance that contrasts with our fast-paced society. In the space of painting I look for ways to bear witness to the complexities of human experience and the passage of time. Ranging from intimate interiors to expansive landscapes, my works carry a sense of temporal ambiguity and narrative potential, emerging from the interplay of adding and removing of substances, where painting becomes both a process of erasure and an integration of imposed limitations.

Four Meter High Ceilings

Datum:
Locatie: Karel Doormanhof 45 (Piet Zwart Institute, MFA studios)
In samenwerking met: PZI MFA Graduates 2023

"Four Meter High Ceilings" was the title of the PZI MFA Graduation Show of 2023. I showcased four large-scale paintings on paper of places that sparked an emotional response in me, which was to paint them. In the exhibition, the curatorial decision of spreading the works through the exhibition space sought to foster dialogues and affinities with the works of my peers and with the architectural qualities.

For the window facade of Showroom MAMA, the Piet Zwart Institute Master Fine Art presented “Partial View”, a provisional exhibition showcasing the research and studio processes of graduating students of the MFA. This intentionally fragmentary presentation offered a sneak peak at work being developed for the 2023 Graduation Show at the MFA Studios at Karel Doormanhof 45, July 7-14.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes - Razões de Humanidade

Datum:
Locatie: SGPCM // Espaço Artes - IPL
In samenwerking met: Diogo Nunes, Luisa da Rocha, Mariana Tavares Carvalho, Miguel Castro, Pedro Braga dos Reis, Santos Rocha

In this project I was invited to create two paintings in response to Aristides de Sousa Mendes act of disobedience. Sousa Mendes was a Portuguese consul during World War II, who defied the orders of António de Oliveira Salazar's Estado Novo regime, issuing visas and passports to thousands of refugees fleeing Nazi Germany, including Jews. This exhibition project sought to rescue him from the oblivion from which he suffered in the country, just after the end of the dictatorial regime in 1974.

A natureza do gesto

Locatie: Módulo - Centro Difusor de Arte

"This exhibition lacks nothing, not even the smell which takes us out of the gallery and into the chaos of the workshop where formless matter still bubbles, that same smell that bothered Marcel Duchamp and that can immerse us in other spaces and... times ." - excerpt of review by: Porfírio, José Luís, 'A natureza do gesto', in Expresso magazine, 2502th ed., 10 Oct 2020
