Educated as an engineer in Industrial Design (MSc) at Delft University of Technology and as an artist (MFA) at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam), Schermer combines the best of two worlds. In his installations, he creates new techniques and deals with materials in unconventional ways. He is an artist and an inventor at the same time, but most of all he is a narrator that uses images instead of words.
Schermer is inspired by the beauty of everyday life, in which the relation between nature and man plays a central role. He studies natural phenomena in detail, to see what exactly takes place. He explores alternative ways to visualise that specific part of reality and uses the innovative outcome to tell a story that finds its origin in the context of the location. He likes to create magic.
