My work examines the interplay between time, causality, and memory, exploring how personal and collective histories merge, dissolve, and reconfigure. Through digital and analog archiving, documentation, and restructuring, I investigate how fragmented material can be reshaped, revealing underlying patterns and unexpected connections. Algorithmic processes disrupt fixed interpretations, allowing image, sound, and text to shift in meaning.

Sonology, modular systems, and live performances form the core of my practice, enabling real-time transformations of archival material. Generative techniques rework existing recordings, introducing an element of unpredictability that exposes the fluid nature of memory. The act of repetition and reprocessing functions as a method to uncover hidden structures and temporal synchronicities within the material itself.

Operating at the intersection of media art, sound art, and film, I position the archive as an evolving system rather than a static repository. Through continuous reinterpretation, I examine how recorded history is shaped by technological processes and how the relationship between past and present remains fluid. The use of automated and rule-based systems introduces a dynamic relationship between control and autonomy, reflecting on the ways in which historical narratives are not only preserved but actively reshaped by the structures through which they are processed.

**Ripple Effect** - Album | 2025 48 min | Digital Audio Self-released as a digital edition and in a limited cassette run With support from WORM Rotterdam In recent years, Barkode collaborated with Tamara van Suylekom in the studio at WORM, conducting a series of sessions. In 2025, this material was developed into the album Ripple Effect. Ripple Effect presents a dialogue between Van Suylekom’s rhythmic precision and Barkode’s abstract, randomised sound textures. The album explores their contrasting approaches, investigating the boundaries of sound and rhythm.

**Samskara** - Algorithmic Cross-Media Installation | 2023 Coding, Digital & Analog Audio Part of the exhibition o/n Play Ground Commissioned by Neck of the Woods Samskara explores the impressions left by past experiences on our consciousness. The work reflects the complex nature of personal narratives and emotional landscapes through sound. It focuses on systems and their interaction with time. The research delves into the functioning of these systems, uncovering their dynamics and significance within a broader context. By reconsidering existential values, Samskara offers new insights into our fragmented world.

**Twee stemmen** - Film | 2023 80 min | 4K, FHD, DV, 8mm, Digital Audio Funded by the City of Rotterdam The film Twee stemmen is an audiovisual exploration of the inner struggle of an artist grappling with mania, insomnia, and anxiety. Haunted by the chaos of his thoughts, he attempts to impose order on his life through self-imposed rules and routines. This structure is not only a practical framework to shape his days with meaning, but also a means of gaining control over his restless mind and managing his inner demons. The film offers a poetic approach to confronting philosophical emptiness, expressed through symbolism, revealing the complexity of the inner life in a subtle and visual manner.

**99 + 1** - Algorithmic Audiovisual Artwork | 2022 25 min | 4K, Digital Audio Commissioned by the Nederlands Fotomuseum Using the Gallery of Honour of Dutch Photography as its source reference, Barkode developed an algorithmic artwork that reveals audiovisual associations and recontextualises the collection. By connecting images, sounds, and data through algorithmic processes, the works from the Gallery are presented from a new perspective. This creates unexpected connections between visual and auditory elements, allowing the works to be experienced differently and enabling new interpretations to emerge.

**De corona archieven NO.01** - Algorithmic Sound Art Work | 2022 30 min | Digital Audio Funded by CBK Rotterdam The sound artwork De Corona Archieven No.01 maps out events that occurred simultaneously across the world at specific moments in time. It explores how this information was shared and reflects on the potential for political manipulation within those processes. The work consists of media fragments collected in a linear database, processed through algorithmically controlled modular filters. These fragments are then arranged through a randomised montage, resulting in a complex sonic palette.

**CELL** - Installation & Performance Series | 2019–2021 Various durations | Mixed Media A series of live performances and installation works Commissioned and presented by Kunsthal Rotterdam CELL is an installation and DIY laboratory focused on audiovisual performance, video art, sound synthesis, new media, and technological innovation. The project was a collaboration between audiovisual artists, musicians, and students from TU Delft and WDKA. The improvisation of the participating artists formed an essential part of the series of performances within CELL. Interaction with the audience also played a significant role. During the execution, this Gesamtkunstwerk evolved into a live audiovisual landscape, directed and arranged by Barkode.

ED - Performance | 2019 30 min | FHD, Digital Audio Commissioned by the Nederlands Fotomuseum, with support from Fonds Kwadraat Barkode and Studio R-nul digitally reworked the archive of Ed van der Elsken into ED, the audiovisual performance presented as the finissage of the exhibition Lust for Life at the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Photographs and film fragments were processed using algorithms and filters, and combined with new recordings made in the museum and around Van der Elsken’s former home. The live audio component of the performance focused on modular sound synthesis and sonological techniques, creating a dynamic interplay with the visual material.

**De audio dagboeken 2013** - 2018 | Sound Artwork | 60 min. | Digital Audio | Geluid collage van een heel jaar aan registraties en audio dagboeken. Ongepolijst, hard en eerlijk. De opnamen zijn in een database geplaatst en daarna met behulp van algoritmes opnieuw teruggebracht in een lineair audio canvas.

**Crazy Lotus** - Video Artwork & Performance Series | 2017 Various durations | 4K, FHD, DV Commissioned by Crazy Lotus Festival Shanghai The video artwork and VJ performance Crazy Lotus was developed on commission for the Crazy Lotus Festival in Shanghai, where it was presented both as a live performance and as a screening. The work draws on years of experience in live visual performance at international festivals, in clubs, and across a variety of multidisciplinary stages. For this edition, new studio recordings were combined with footage shot on location in Shanghai and re-edited material from earlier works, resulting in a layered visual composition.

**Het Apollo & Dionysus Komplex** - Installation, Film, Performance | 2016 Various durations | Mixed Media Part of the exhibition Commissioned by Route du Nord The fourth part of the Apollo & Dionysus Komplex series explored psychological themes such as mindfulness and behaviourism. The installation was based on an extensive personal archive of handwritten index cards, in which symbolism played a central thematic role. The work combined a mixed media installation with a performance, a sound artwork, and a short film as a spin-off. It was presented inside an isolation cell at the former Noordsingel Prison in Rotterdam.
