I am a white, trans, Scottish artist, writer, and editor. I make things with writing, sound, performance, installation, and video.

To develop my work I share time in places, I share time with people, I make recordings, I write, I organize gatherings where different people share their experiences and knowledge with one another. Outcomes of these processes involve exhibitions, publications, mixtapes, workshops, textiles, walks, and more.

My academic research focuses on both more-than-sonic listening and the ontological understandings of sound that different ways of thinking about listening emerge from, to attend to the relations and regimes of power embedded within them.

Much of my creative practice is concerned with modes of attention and awareness, and the politics and power relations that are implicitly or explicitly embedded within different practices of listening. My research explores more than aural forms of listening where the temporality of reverberation is understood to be extended across generations and wonders what modes of listening attention are necessary for decolonizing work within the colonial context of Europe, particularly for people with white ancestry.

I collaborate in various ways. I have made a theatre performance with small groups of collaborators and have collaborated within performance and sound works led by other artists. At the moment, I collaborate with Taraneh Fazeli and a group of artists, writers, and activists who are co-producing a series of texts and tools about the overlaps between disability justice, decolonizing processes, community care, and environmental justice. In the past, I co-organised Tender Center, a queer community centre for creative collaboration, activism, study, community support, and celebratory events.

I have applied an expanded creative listening methodology to a study of two sites – a former observatory and tidal research centre in north-west England and Ross and Cromarty in the Scottish Highlands – that are materially connected by greenheart wood. The project started from research into how the wood used to construct the observatory was part of a complex system of deforestation, plantation capitalism, and repression of uprisings by enslaved people in Suriname and Guyana that connects the colonial practices, economies, and church systems of the Netherlands, with those of Scotland (where I’m from). My own family history is tied together by Presbyterian missionary work in South America and crofting on formerly “empty” land in the Highlands so this project in many ways is keeping a focus on the ways that, in Europe, colonial histories and structures continue to constitute systems of land ownership, institutions, interpersonal relations, and internal relations within a person. The project consists of a suite of works: two films, one stereo sound piece, and a publication.

Community Care

Datum:
Locatie: The Burr of Berwick
In samenwerking met: Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival

Drawing on knowledge of community care and mutual aid organisers, we will think about methods like resource sharing, letter writing for prisoner support, and DIY healthcare, as well as ways to share that knowledge through sound. This workshop will explore care as a range of political practices that involve maintenance, pleasure, conflict, sustenance, and scarcity.
