Charlie Jansen (b. 2000) lives and works in Rotterdam. She graduated from St Joost School of Art & Design in 2023.
Charlie is a visual artist working primarily with mixed-media sound installations.
Her installations treat materials as potential instruments, inviting them to speak, vibrate, and respond. Driven by curiosity toward materiality and its physical potential to generate sound, her practice combines technical, mechanical and sonic research with sensory experimentation, resulting in immersive installations that invite attentive listening
Her research centers on the relationship between material and its perceiver, questioning how attention can be drawn when sound is not immediately visible. The beauty of sound, she feels, lies in the fact that it is a material one cannot look away from. It is a sensory experience that washes over the listener, sparking emotions and memories and creating a unique and intimate experience for each individual.
GRAW 2025
At GRAW 2025, Charlie Jansen presented "Sow / Reap", a sound installation where two large metal sheets enter a dialogue in resonance, producing feedback loops that shift between deep, resonant tones and delicate, subtle sounds. Alongside this she presented "i keep you all stored away", a video composition made from a personal archive, exploring memory’s chaotic, non-linear unfolding and the fragile attempt to hold onto fleeting moments that inevitably fade over time.
