Danae Io is an artist working in film, sculpture and text. Her work examines the way personal and collective histories get narrativized and consolidated via often intangible means. She looks into the relationship between people and land as well as the role of language in forming realities.

Methodologically, my practice is informed by the long-standing research projects I am part of, such as System of Systems, and my encounters with others in the process. 'System of Systems' is an ongoing research project using the format of exhibitions, publications and public programming to examine the use of technology and bureaucracy in European migration processing systems.

Seven Types of Dust
Seven Types of Dust, 2024 - Seen through the shimmering heat haze, a group of US archeologists are studying the plains of de-industrialised Thebes, the city of Antigone and Oedipus. The camera moves between agriculture, infrastructure, and ancient ruins while a field worker is leaving the crops after a day’s labour. The landscape scenes are overlaid with an on-screen poem on Thebes’ polluted soil and its histories of impurity and displacement.
Essay: Working Sheets, 2023
Essay: Working Sheets, 2023 - Stainless steel, powder coated aluminium, paper, security watermark ink, perspex. 48.7 x 130 x 24.7 cm Commissioned by State of Concept Fabricated in stainless steel and standing as a composite of three metals polluting Thebes, the work records its exposure to the atmospheric conditions through the paper. The printed image comes from local industrial workers’ pamphlets and is printed with security watermarking ink used by the Greek Ministry of Finance.
Noted or otherwise transformed, 2023
Noted or otherwise transformed, 2023 - MDF, foam, pencil, screws. 90x 325 x 45 x cm An 1:1 reproduction of an ad-hoc slide built by an archivist at Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive to improve the internal operation of archiving. The slide was originally fabricated to fit the building’s staircase.
Sprouts of a dragon’s teeth, 2023 (Password: Thebes) - Screened at ICA London and Rotterdam Film Festival 2023 (IFFR). Through meditative shots of landscapes and animals in Thebes, the film poetically reflects on notions of nationbuilding, autochthony, migration, othering and the role of myth in contemporary Thebes. While the focus of the work rests on human affairs, the non-human is brought to the forefront, questioning the ways human infrastructures affect not only the lives of people but also the environment and non-human animals. The film is written in collaboration with poet and theorist Stathis Gourgouris, Professor of Classics and English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
Essay ?, Essay ?, Essay ?, 2023 - 80.5 x 80.5 x 23cm. Powder-coated steel, paper, brushed steel. Installed in what will become UKS’ library and archive, the sculptures Essay A/Essay E/ Essay H(2023) are the result of research into the role of archives, administration and alphabetic writing in forming histories of belonging and statehood. The sculptures formally reference disused public displays found in Athens and reading/writing stands. They hold hand-tracings of archival documents from the municipal archives of Thebes on A4 paper. Each print painstakingly traces these historical pages by hand leaving behind an echo of centuries of bureaucratic labour to maintain societal structures.

Not all winters, 2022 - Fabric, 150cm x 70cm work with Alice dos Reis and Bin Koh. Part of the exhibition 'I am inside who I was', 2022 at PuntWG Amsterdam. All work is made collaboratively with Bin Koh and Alice dos Reis. The title of the show is borrowed from Rachel Zucker’s book-long poem 'Eating the Underworld' which re-tells the myth of Persephone, the daughter of Demeter who ran away from her mother to marry Hades and was the only mythical figure that could move between the world of the living and the underworld. The artists read the role of the pomegranate fruit in the myth as a link between the world above and under, a refusal of dichotomies by being in between or both.
The lips, the lisp, the slip of the tongue - 2018, HD video installation with binaural audio, 15’ 25”, vinyl floor, artificial saliva. The video depicts elements of the mouth as autonomous agents, echoing the way voice interfaces consider the speaking process to be composed of distinct procedures that independently define voice, language and speech recognition. Speech in those interfaces is defined not as an embodied thinking process but a combinatorial method. The voiceover explores processes of modelling the voice and its relation to corporeality through its narratives and modes of speaking. The video is composed of a sequence of controlled ‘chapters’ that stage their own collapsing into incomprehensible incantations in the last scene.

Palimpsest Landscapes

Datum:
Locatie: ICA

I presented my film as part of a screening program at ICA, London. Like palimpsest pages on which new writing has been superimposed on the traces of old, this program of short films looks at landscapes as sites where multiple histories have been inscribed and overwritten on the physical terrain. In their varying cinematic languages, the selected works explore landscapes not just as backdrops to narratives but as devices partaking in historical processes.

Open Systems

An open system is porous; its boundaries are permeable by energy and matter. It is in constant exchange with its surroundings; information, myths, capital, ideas, scent, debris and people flow inexhaustibly between and through systems and their environments. The open system cannot exist in a state of equilibrium; its health is wholly dependent on input, process and output. UKS – Young Artists' Society presents new works by five young artists. UKS – Young Artists’ Society presents new works by five young artists. The works respectively present fragments of an online dating site; the foundational myth of the Greek city of Thebes; sculptural repetition; a peek into the lunchbreaks of Korean factory workers; and a space clothed in a miasma of ancient plants. Each work a system of its own, they inhabit UKS’ new headquarters as we open our doors to spark the exchange of energy.

A curated program investigating the increasing reliance on technology within migration systems. From exploring technologies as methods of both making and discrediting evidence, to the role of tech in forming an unevenly distributed restriction on bodies, and to the border as a site of growing investment and profit, their research and practice contributes to exposing and thinking through the surge in technological strategies for exclusion in, and by, Europe.

System of Systems is a multidisciplinary research project that analyzes the bureaucratic, spatial and technological conditions that shape Europe's migration landscape. We collaborate with a range of practitioners – activists to artists, policy makers to academics – to elucidate how nation states use complex and overlapping systems to produce, manage and process migration.
