Daniël de Jong (1994), is a Rotterdam-based architectural designer with an emphasis on experimental research.
He has both a bachelor’s degree in construction engineering in 2016, as well as a bachelor’s degree in architectural design from Maastricht Academy of Architecture (MAA) in 2020. In 2023 he completed the Master of Interior Architecture Research + Design (MIARD) from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam.

His spatial experiments reflect his fascination with architectural depictions of preexisting objects frequently disregarded or alienated in their context. Via methods that are akin to archeology, he meticulously collects, documents, and archives these objects to map their cultural significance. This often results in intricate drawings, animations, documentation, and physical models that aim to expand our understanding of designed environments.

Within his practice, he seeks to critically examine and test the role that architecture plays in public organization and institutional systems. Through this approach, de Jong explores various space-making techniques that combine traditional architectural understandings with socio-political transformations.

Shifting Safeguards
Shifting Safeguards - The project investigates institutionalised public sonic devices—such as public sirens, mobile alerts, ShotSpotter, and the Mosquito—in socio-architectural atmospheres. Considering sound as a tool of spatial governance rather than merely communication, it explores how these technologies influence movement, behaviour, and the experience of public space. Through a ruin-like installation inspired on the Dutch public siren, the project speculates on the lasting impact of sonic infrastructures on the built environment, questioning how their invisible presence may leave traces over time. The installation consists of audio recordings captured during the Dutch air siren tests, which take place on the first Monday of every month. The recordings are edited into very low frequencies that have the potential to fracture the plaster-cast shells from within.
Heterotopias
Heterotopias - 2025 - Public installation onboard the ss Rotterdam. Together with Blise Orr. Heterotopias is a design-research project that explores the cruise ship as an architectural and socio-cultural “information bubble”. A heterotopic space that reflects society on land. Through fieldwork, interviews, archival research, and research-through-drawing, the project examines how cruise ships function simultaneously as spectacle, workplace, home, and memory machine. Working with maritime institutions in Rotterdam and in close collaboration with a retired seaman on board the ss Rotterdam, the research maps visible and invisible structures of life at sea. From hierarchies and labor below deck to ports, shipyards, and deconstruction sites on land. Using tools such as photogrammetry, LiDAR, scaled models, and speculative drawing, the project treats design itself as a method of inquiry, producing new ways of understanding and representing the ship.
Mirror Object
Mirror Object - Made of brushed stainless steel, with two polished reflective surfaces. These surfaces are oriented in such a way that, from within the kitchen, both the garden and the sky become visible. The object is designed as an observation tool, enabling extended perspectives during everyday kitchen activities.
Polystyrene Site Maps
Polystyrene Site Maps - Driven by a fascination with their literal and conceptual representation, the project revolves around polystyrene packaging elements, investigating them as artefacts of the past. The result is a speculative collection of recasted objects, animations, and drawings.
