Emma Verhoeven is a Rotterdam-based media artist, designer, and educator. Her work explores how digital media shape our desires and perceptions of a meaningful life, focusing on themes like self-optimization, mental health, and societal pressure. Through playful research methods, she creates installations, videos, and workshops that invite critical engagement.
As a founder of Extra Practice, a community art space for convivial working, she is passionate about creating space and time for experimental learning and (self-)reflection. As an educator, she develops and hosts workshops for teens, using world-building and mapping to explore their inner landscapes.
Recently, Emma has been exploring the concept of regenerative living by merging ecological thinking with digital culture, system therapy, and design. She is particularly interested in how principles from regenerative agriculture and permaculture can be applied to our emotional and cultural ecosystems.
Regenerative Dinners
Regenerative Dinners are immersive gatherings blending food, storytelling and design to explore regenerative living. Hosted with my sisters Renée and Isabelle, these evenings feature seasonal dishes, speculative farm visuals, and interactive elements that invite guests to imagine new ways of relating to land, labor, and each other — at the table and beyond.
𝘌̶𝘹̶𝘵̶𝘳̶𝘢̶ 𝓔𝓶𝓶𝓪’𝓼 Practice🔑 🧜🏻♀️ 🧩
𝘌̶𝘹̶𝘵̶𝘳̶𝘢̶ 𝓔𝓶𝓶𝓪’𝓼 Practice🔑 🧜🏻♀️ 🧩 was a self-initiated solo show at Extra Practice featuring media installations, video collages, VR works, and sketches exploring themes of mental health, self-improvement, and meaning-making. The act of exhibiting became a playful yet sincere attempt to reflect, regroup, and reconnect with my artistic practice.
Telepresence
A project by two studios in different cities who wanted to feel closer: Extra Practice in Rotterdam and SWSWS69 in Arnhem. Both initiatives stemmed from a desire to share resources and company in a cultural field that asks you to work for yourself as a freelancer. How can we extend this sense of solidarity beyond the studio walls, towards each other and other like-minded spaces that pop up everywhere? A series of 6 digital devices that communicate between our spaces explore this question.
I Want To Become a Regenerative Farm
During a self-initiated residency at La Junquera, a regenerative farm in Spain, I explored the parallels between ecological systems and mental well-being. Through daily writing, filming, and conversations with agro-ecologist (and sister) Renée Verhoeven, I developed the foundation for a visual essay on regenerative living, developed with and published in Robida Magazine.
United Mental States
The Mental States project is a series of experimental workshops for teens and early tweens about mapping their mental health states. Through meditation-like exercises and guided visualizations, sketching and mapping, participants collectively visualize different mental states as physical locations, and write down descriptions and words that come up. The aim is to create a collective visual map of participants' inner world, which can be used as a starting point for conversations and reflection.
Digital Place-makers
As part of the Translocal Lives research project that investigates the intersection between refugee settlement, place-making, and digital technologies. I taught 15 participants with a refugee background to translate their stories about belonging into 3-5 minute short films, shot on smartphones. Results will be screened in December, at an event where local governance actors in the migration field will be present to exchange perspectives. Currently finishing a short documentary about the proces!
Once Upon A Time in Desktoppywood
A 3-day workshop created for the MA Critical Inquiry Lab at the Design Academy Eindhoven in which we taught theory about and tools for desktop filmmaking, using mainstream popular media as our material for critical video essays.
The Self Design Academy
The installation Escape Here Now gives an absurd overview of the confusing economy of the Self, in the form of an immersive, escape room-like experience that sends its visitors on a quest for meaning and self-discovery. As a virtual alternative, a 2D point-and-click game can be played on the online exhibition website.
E-ROB (Experimental Rehab for Online Buyers)
Every year, thousands of people become victims to online shopping fraud, despite warning campaigns. Why is it that even when we aware of the danger, we can still be deceived? Could there be a deeper drive, overruling our rational judgement, that we need to come to terms with? To investigate this, we set up E-ROB, the Experimental Rehab for Online Buyers. At DDW we tested, diagnosed and treated visitors to both rE-search and rE-boot their online shoppin
The Data Self
Screening of 'Nero' at The Data Self: In a world shaped by signals and codes, technology often becomes the lens through which identity and selfhood are transformed. The films in this program tell the human and inhuman stories across simulations and real environments in order to question the politics of representation and imagination.
