My work is a "visual pamphlet" in which I respond to the contemporary image of the double standard surrounding the sexuality of women in the media. I make self-portraits and self-representations of women and mainly work with the medium of photography (formerly video). I use performance photography. I use the photos that arise in my performative sessions as interventions in public space: uploads on social media, sticking posters in the city, stickers, sending cards and other actions in the public space.

I see this intervention in the public space as a territorial act (visual pamphlet) distributed in the public space in order to reclaim that public space (normally for advertising) for women. I also participate in formal presentations in exhibitions at home and abroad.

Now that the power and censorship of social media is even greater
and narrowing the debate around women's self-presentation, I feel the need to reclaim public space in various ways.

**Shooting Back** - “Scheurwater’s work evolves in the tradition of the self-portrait in photography. Think for example of Robert Mapplethorpe’s sexually charged visual provocations or Francesca Woodman’s erotic mise-en-scène, to name only two artists. Scheurwater‘s visual self-explorations extend the boundaries of another main topic in art history and photography: the pose. But in her pictures model and artist are one. **Sincerly Not Yours** - With her latest project Sincerely Not Yours, Dutch artist Hester Scheurwater strikes back (again) –the ironic twist of the famous closing formula functioning as the artist’s response to the critics and comments she had received as a result of her previous work Shooting Back. She now not only took her work on social media but on the streets of her hometown and elsewhere thanks to postcards sent to every corner of the world. Sincerely Not Yours started from the wish to show the female body as it is, in all its diversity. For the series, Scheurwater published a call for women to come to her studio and get photographed in the nude. The photographs were then printed on stickers and pasted on the streets of Rotterdam. The placement of these images of the female body –sometimes scarred by cancer surgery and life—were territorial acts of reclaiming public space for women of all paths of life and body shapes.

**Performance Slouch Beftival Amsterdam** - Een ode aan de vulva, geen pornopoezen maar lippen zonder schaamte - uit essay Romy Zwart voor Mister Motley. Over Performance SLOUCH by Hester Scheurwater, starring Noemi Calzavara at Sexyland " Vergelijkbaar met de performance van Robertis is het optreden ‘SLOUCH’ van Hester Scheurwater met danseres Noemi Calzavara in de hoofdrol. Tijdens de voorstelling die in begin 2022 plaatsvond in Sexyland World, een cultureel clubhuis in Amsterdam, lag Calzavara op een kruk met enkel een trui aan. De danseres vouwde haar benen open en toonde haar blote vulva aan het publiek. Met haar benen wijd draaide ze zichzelf rond op de kruk, zodat iedereen in de zaal haar kon bekijken. De toeschouwers konden niet ongegeneerd de voyeur uithangen, want de blik van de performer hield hun nauwlettend in de gaten. De performance was confronterend, wat bleek uit de vele mensen (opvallend genoeg voornamelijk mannen) die de blikken uit de weg gingen en de ruimte verlieten. Scheurwater reageert met haar werk op de dubbele standaard rondom vrouwelijke seksualiteit in de media. Aan de ene kant moeten vrouwen niet te preuts zijn en aan de andere kant wordt het toe-eigenen van seksualiteit gezien als zedeloosheid. In performances als ‘SLOUCH’ eisen kunstenaars de openbare ruimte terug en de macht over hoe er naar haar lichaam en seksualiteit wordt gekeken. Dit is in reactie op de censuur op sociale media en hoe het vrouwelijk lichaam wordt ingezet voor advertenties. Het geïdealiseerde beeld dat voldoet aan de schoonheidsidealen heeft geen plek in het oeuvre van Scheurwater."

**The Ideal Woman** - Wild Summer of Art Brutus

**Sex Shooter Brutus Rotterdam** - SEX SHOOTER by Hester Scheurwater BRUTUS Rotterdam "Sex Shooter" is Hester Scheurwater’s latest work, exploring gender freedom, identity, desire, and representation. The exhibition reframes the male gaze, empowering individuals to express their sexuality and identity on their own terms. Through public interventions and raw, performative portraits, Scheurwater challenges societal norms and censorship, advocating for women’s visibility. “SEX SHOOTER is commissioned and produced by Noorderlicht in collaboration with Brave New World Producties. It is part of the pan-European project ULYSSES European Odyssey, celebrating the centennial of James Joyce’s literary masterpiece.” Artists from 18 cities in 16 European cities each took one of the 18 chapters from James Joyce’s book Ulysses as their starting point. Scheurwater focused on ‘Nausicaa,’ chapter XIII in this classic novel, which focuses on the theme of sexuality. It is one of the most controversial chapters of the book.

**Ode email project met consent 2019** - De serie Ode (2019) van Scheurwater is een project dat ze startte naar aanleiding van de ongevraagde ontvangst van "dickpics" - foto's van mannelijke geslachtsdelen die mannen per e-mail en sociale media haar toestuurden. Scheurwaters eigen foto's met stijve piemels van vrijwilligersmodellen waren oorspronkelijk niet bedoeld om als serie in een museum te worden getoond, maar om individueel per mail te worden verzonden naar iedereen - mannen en vrouwen - die ze wilde ontvangen, met consent. Door haar eigen afbeeldingen van mannelijke erecties te maken, ging het Scheurwater om de “dickpic-trend” om te keren door het gebaar zich toe te eigenen de controle te nemen en consent te vragen. Ode volgt het mailart-project van Scheurwater, Sincerely Not Yours (2019-), waarin ze ansichtkaarten van enkele van haar meest extreme zelfportretten naar alle uithoeken van de wereld stuurt. Deze post-internetprojecten maken zelf deel uit van de jarenlange praktijk van Scheurwater om oorspronkelijk digitale fenomenen te vertalen naar het echte leven, waarbij vaak beelden openbaar worden gemaakt die bedoeld waren voor privé (digitaal) gebruik. Scheurwater staat bekend om haar sticker-, billboard- en 'wild beaming'-projecten die lichamen tonen die niet voldoen aan de uniforme en strakke representatie van het vrouwenlichaam in de commerciële heteropatriarchale beeldcultuur. Als zodanig vat Sexshooter van Scheurwater de toewijding van de kunstenaar samen om het standaardbeeld van de vrouw in mainstream cultuur opnieuw vorm te geven en de confrontatie aan te gaan met maatschappelijke normen rond de representatie van gender en seksualiteit. Dit doet zij door ons uit te nodigen om onze eigen perspectieven uit te dagen en opnieuw te bedenken

Noorderlicht** - Sex Shooter - The Liberation of Sexual Identity Hester Scheurwater 16 september - 17 december 2023 , Wo t/m Zo 12.00 - 18:00 uur Stationskwartier, Snekertrekweg 1, Leeuwarden Sex Shooter – The Liberation of Sexual Identity Een multimedia-installatie van Hester Scheurwater Noorderlicht, in het Stationskwartier Leeuwarden Sex Shooter is het nieuwste werk van Hester Scheurwater waarin zij voor de eerste keer foto’s, video’s, registraties van performances, geluid en geur combineert in een installatie die de bezoeker een associatieve en zintuigelijke ervaring bezorgd in een speciaal voor dit doel ingerichte tentoonstellingsruimte in het voormalige postsorteercentrum bij het station van Leeuwarden . Scheurwater wil in deze installatie de diffusiteit van een seksuele identiteit laten zien en de verwarring die dat kan opleveren bij de toeschouwer alsook het zelfbewustzijn van de modellen die reageerden op Scheurwaters oproep om gefotografeerd te worden bij het uiten van hun seksuele zelf en genderidentiteit. Er heerst een dubbele moraal waarin we enerzijds onszelf moeten ontplooien en onze eigen, unieke, persoonlijkheid moeten cultiveren, zonder schaamte of terughoudendheid, maar anderzijds wordt het aannemen of omarmen van een fluïde seksualiteit als aanstootgevend of zelfs bedreigend ervaren. In Sex Shooter wil Hester Scheurwater de macht over hoe er naar het lichaam en de seksualiteit wordt gekeken wordt teruggegeven aan het model, de (machts)verhouding tussen toeschouwer en object omdraaien. De tentoonstelling, in opdracht van Noorderlicht in Leeuwarden, is onderdeel van Ulysses: European Odyssey 2022-2024. Dit door de EU gefinancierde project bestaat uit achttien kunstinterventies in evenzoveel Europese steden, waaronder Dublin en Parijs, die geïnspireerd zijn op een hoofdstuk uit de gelijknamige modernistische klassieker van James Joyce. Leeuwarden vormt het toneel voor Ulysses' ACT II, hoofdstuk 13, Nausicaa en gaat in op het thema 'Gendervrijheid in het hedendaagse Europa'. In het controversiële dertiende hoofdstuk masturbeert de hoofdpersoon Leopold Bloom voor de aanblik van een jonge vrouw, Gerty MacDowell, die in de verte haar rok optilt en haar benen en ondergoed laat zien. Terwijl Bloom klaarkomt op het ritmische schouwspel van licht en geluid van vuurwerk dagdroomt MacDowell over wat het betekent om een verliefde vrouw te zijn en over het instituut huwelijk. De ogenschijnlijk normatieve geslachtsverdeling: de stereotypische romantische vrouw die passief haar lichaam laat zien en de geseksualiseerde man die actief kijkt was voor Schreurwater het perfecte uitgangspunt om de rollen om te keren. Hester Scheurwater richtte zich na haar afstuderen aan de KABK in Den Haag op het maken van korte films en video's die werden vertoond in binnen- en buitenland. Met de opkomst van sociale media begon ze aan het begin van de eeuwwisseling zelfportretten te plaatsen op met name Facebook, een destijds nog ogenschijnlijk vooruitstrevend platform met grote vrijheid, waar zij al snel op de grenzen van wat betamelijk werd geacht voor met name de vrouwelijke lichamelijkheid, wat uitmondde in diverse fototentoonstellingen met dit werk. **Erwin Olaf Magazine bijdrage aan Ode** - Deze eenmalige uitgave is verkrijgbaar in vier verschillende covers met zelfportretten van Erwin Olaf en verschijnt tijdens de grote solotentoonstelling in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.De mens, de activist, de kunstenaar, de vriend: dat was Erwin Olaf voor velen. Veertig kunstenaars laten hun licht over hem schijnen in een eenmalig magazine van bijna 200 pagina’s, met veel fotografie en verhalen over feest, liefde, maar ook afscheid, gepest worden en de kracht om jezelf te zijn. Deze week is het Erwin Olaf Magazine feestelijk gelanceerd in Studio Wieman.
