Jeltje Schuurmans

Jeltje Schuurmans (1996) is a Rotterdam-based multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, film, installation, and sound.She graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht) and completed her Master’s degree at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam in 2023. Her installations emerge as sensory landscapes shaped by tactile materials and estranged objects that echo the body. These elements do not depict, but resist—producing friction, discomfort, and proximity. Memory, dream, and psyche drift together, creating environments where physical, psychological, and symbolic layers remain in flux.

Her work has been shown, among others, in a group exhibition at ECC Italy during the Venice Biennale and at Het HEM in Zaandam.

Ecdysis 2025 - ‘It was staring at me—a big white goose. I felt a strong urge to catch it, as if it were a game or a challenge. But the goose didn’t want to be caught. We were in a familiar place: the parking lot behind the backyard of our first home. The vessel carrying my thoughts resembled my current self, but not quite. When I looked at my hands, they were the size of my four-year-old nephew’s. I wasn’t alone—others were there too, the same age as me. We were playing, though I didn’t recognize them. I ran after the goose. She defended herself, biting me. It hurt badly. I didn’t want to grab her anymore, nor push further—I didn’t want to hurt her. My brother was there too, and he was determined. He caught the goose, but she attacked him fiercely. I helped him by holding her beak. I didn’t want to, I was afraid, but I managed. We brought the goose into our backyard. Suddenly, a vast field of grass appeared—it hadn’t been there before. We set the goose down on the grass. Her body bounced against the ground, her neck muscles straining against our tiny hands, until she stopped. My brother twisted her neck. She could no longer bite, run, or make a sound. We stood looking down at her lifeless body.’
