Joris Kuipers

sculptuur , natuur , installatie , Abstract

Wall reliefs, suspended sculptures and room-filling installations populate the realm of Rotterdam-based artist Joris Kuipers. His abstract forms, reminiscent of floral and crystalline exuberance, are made of two-dimensional elements layered into airy ensembles that organically expand in the surrounding space.

The energy and dynamics Kuipers invests in each individual work are transformed into lively, complex compositions full of movement and joy. His deliberate palette, with its initial sense of harmony, turns out to consist of many contrasting colors that give the hand-drawn and laser-cut component their deep, vibrant hue.

In large installations and smaller pieces alike, Kuipers strives to delight the viewer, dazzling them with an abundance of shapes and vivid details that immediately appeal to the imagination.

BERM
BERM - BERM (Dutch for roadside), relates to my fascination with the plants proliferating side by side and following each other through the seasons, like a perpetuum mobile I found on the verge of the road. The butterbur blooming in early spring before it overshadows the roadsides with its tall leaves; The spotted leaf of the lungwort or the field thistle welcoming autumn with clouds of fluffy seeds. All these impressions found their way into the colourful stratification of the relief that has been constructed from countless abstracted laser-cut leaves. The layered nature of the relief extends to the painted surfaces of the separate leaves, that won’t fully reveal their wealth of techniques and hues until you look very closely. The hidden details entice you to explore the work and let yourself be swept along by the C-shaped movement that imbues Baroque and Rococo with such lively dynamics. Eyeto-eye with BERM’s larger and smaller leaves, you can easily lose yourself in associations, musings, memories perhaps of joyful moments. For me, the work is a reference to my childhood, when I felt small among the towering vegetation and nature was a magical place to play and hide, where I could stay for hours, mesmerised by the tiniest wonders of the world. Jardins Suspendus
Jardins Suspendus - Jardins Suspendus The spatial sensation of spring Jardins Suspendus is a commissioned public artwork for Gala Place, Nanjing, inspired by plum blossoms and the mythic Kunlun Xuanpu—the Hanging Gardens. Rather than being grounded in the earth, the work is suspended in the air, where spring drifts like clouds and floral forms quietly linger. Petals are endlessly renewed, holding a moment where shifting perspectives preserve the beauty of time. The immersive installation creates a soft, blush-pink floral atmosphere that surrounds visitors as they move through the space, offering a moment of calm within a dynamic urban setting. Artwork details: Jardins Suspendus, Aluminum Alloy, Acrylic Paint 1210 × 1000 × 1200 cm Nanjing, CN 2026. Designed and executed in close collaboration with Purple Roof Public Art, CN.
