Karlijn de Lange is a visual artist and educator based in Rotterdam. Her practice explores the relationship between memory and landscape, mostly through the bird’s-eye view. Working across drawing, oil painting, and ceramics, she revisits personal geographies and considers memory as something fluid and changeable. Rather than treating recollection as fixed, she approaches it as a space where images can shift through the act of making. Many of her memories are connected to the desert regions of the United States, which she returns to through satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and family archives. More recently, she has expanded her practice to include stop-motion and set building, exploring the possibilities of constructed worlds and storytelling.
In 2020, she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and Design Teacher Training at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. During her studies, she spent a semester on exchange at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, in the Painting Department. She subsequently spent three years teaching Art at high schools in the Netherlands. Karlijn recently obtained her MFA from Sint Lucas in Antwerp.

Apocalypse Now
In light of the recent shutdown of 21st century life, as well as the closing of schools, specifically in art institutions in Los Angeles, it is important to create and maintain spaces for artists to show their work. In response to this, Schuyler Hazard and Laela White have decided to team up and create a home gallery space. The first show is titled “Apocalypse Now”. The show will present work by Otis students in response to the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus within the Los Angeles community.
