Marie Kolářová works around topics that intertwine online and offline, questioning social norms, community and culture. She uses a range of methods to transfer graphics into various media, seeking a connection between the material and the story it can convey. Her works are playful yet socially conscious, current yet traditional, chaotic yet organized. She is part of the designer duo Familiar Form with Myeonga Seo, together reimagining familiar objects and environments through a playful and unconventional lens. She also co-leads Cakethingzzz with Seo, a project that explores decorative cake making as sculptural, experimental celebrations of everyday joy.

Bohemian Crystal - In most Czech households, including those of Marie Kolářová’s grandparents, treasured handmade glassware is stored in cabinets and reserved for special occasions. However, rising energy costs and declining demand now threaten this traditional craft, rooted in the country’s rich glassmaking heritage. Marie and Seo collaborate on reimagining this endangered art by repurposing leftover sheet glass to create a collection of nesting vases. They handcut traditional patterns into the glass using a diamond grindstone, blending these timeless motifs with contemporary rectangular forms that suit modern interiors. By collaborating closely with craftsmen local to the Šumava mountains, Marie and Seo aim to preserve this cultural legacy, adapting it for a new generation that values sustainability alongside artistry.
Ornamental Folds
Ornamental Folds - This project explores a new method of crafting sheet metal, giving a soft, ornamental appearance to objects which contrasts with typical metal furniture. Industrial production often uses complex machinery to bend metal sheets, limiting design possibilities. Metal sheets can also be folded using small cuts along folding lines, eliminating the need for specialised bending machines. Freed from the limitations of bending machines, new design possibilities open up. Different proportions as well as curved and organic lines become possible. Rather than cutting simple dotted lines, Seo and Marie developed decorative demarcations. The cuts become three dimensional by folding, giving an ornamental look to the edges. Industrial metal fabrication, digital design tools and laser cutting come together to propose new craft possibilities.

Marie Kolářová and Myeonga Seo, working together as Familiar Form, were selected as one of the ten finalists of the prestigious Design Parade Hyères competition at Villa Noailles, France. Their projects Ornamental Folds and Bohemian Crystal were presented during the festival and showcased throughout the summer at the renowned modernist villa.
