Like a dancer expressing emotion through movement or a sculptor capturing presence with one pose perpetually still, I like to work with the body as a tool for direct expression. Amidst mountains, fields and in my studio, I dance with landscape and materials to explore our emotional and physical relation to the earth and each other.

While working I playfully move between drawing, performative gesture, sculpture and photography. When striking a pose, eyes closed, holding my breath, I can feel how the moment stretches around itself. At once introspective, turned away, it is also when we are most powerful and connected, able to create something new in the world. My embodied way of working and the use of natural materials such as charcoal, graphite and mud allow me to create raw and expressive images in which content and process merge. A kind of thinking through making which foregrounds the emotional, entangled, and conflicted nature of our being in this world.

Grounded in the joy and beauty of life, my work doesn't say away from intense emotions of sadness, outrage and anger. Whatever the outcome, I see my practice as a way of nurturing intimate and caring relations to life and to others.

Won't Be Tamed
Won't Be Tamed - Site specific installation and temporary performative sculpture on the facade of Inarttendu Cultural Association & Gallery for Contemporary Art in Aosta. This piece was made for the opening of my duo exhibit Won’t Be Tamed with artist Alessia Lupo Cecchet as joint second prize winners of the international Arte Alte competition. My contribution was made possible with the generous support of Alina Art Foundation, Innartendu Gallery and CBK Rotterdam.
Paperweights (Earth Embrace)
Paperweights (Earth Embrace) - The ability of paper hold and become many different things is what binds the works in this series. Evoking the weight of rocks and boulders in some, the same paper structures take flight as ephemeral dance partners in others. Entire mountain ranges can appear above the figure with just a few pins on the wall, while a change in lighting might make them look instead like wings. Each scene conveys an intimate relation between bodies of vastly different (temporal) presence. Together the works speak to the ambiguous nature of what we take and carry as given. A selection of works from the Paperweight series were exhibited during Art Week Rotterdam 2025. The series was also an integral part of my 2025 exhibit 'Won't Be Tamed'.
Choreographies of belonging (2024) BAK, Utrecht
Choreographies of belonging - BAK, Utrecht - ‘Choreographies of Belonging’ was performed live at BAK Utrecht as part of the public event Dreaming in the Dark. The piece offered a contemplative and embodied exploration of belonging: to geological structures that precede and outlast us, to the earth and it’s becoming, to time and place, to loss. Choreographies of belonging was created especially for the occasion as one of the artistic provocations for the Art Utopia Politics sessions that took place from the 3rd-5th of July 2024. The sessions brought together a diverse group of artist-researcher-practitioners who actively experiment with the role of creative and artistic practices in cultivating radical collective imagination and alternative forms of politics—be they disruptive, emancipatory, agonistic, speculative, or prefigurative. The work was performed alongside the first 5 minutes of a beautiful and evocative live music set by Josie Chambers (vocals) and Noor Noor (music).
Sometimes we hold things together (2025)
These papers were mountains, these embers were ashes. Sometimes we hold things together - Video excerpt from one of the video works that featured in my solo exhibition 'Sometimes We Hold Things Together' (2025) for Upscale Gallery. For this exhibit I created a site specific performance and video installation in collaboration with studio seedlings and wind.
Act II - Movement I
Act II - Movement I - 2026 - Charcoal and white pastel on fine art print on 160gr Awagami paper, 65 x 90 cm
Amidst - Amidst groups a series of works in which the body enters into a direct physical dialogue with large scale drawings. Building on the themes that surfaced while working on 'Our Roots Are Dark', and the way that series blurred the boundaries between body and drawing, this series was born out of the urge to wrestle with drawing in a more direct way. The resulting works also speak to the creative process itself: to power and surrender, to being affected in unknown ways, to turmoil.
Video stills from site specific performative sculpture - The video essay is a joint production of philosopher Tim de Mey, author Annelies Verbeke, cellist and composer Saartje van Camp, myself and filmmaker Stefan de Graaff. For this project I was commissioned by the International School of Philosophy to create an artwork that would feature in the video. In edition to the performative sculpture, Saartje van Camp and I worked together to create the closing theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZo5PUuHsUY&t=5s
Earthling gatherer - charcoal, pencil & photo print on paper - This work was part of my 2023 solo exhibition 'Our Roots are Dark'. The exhibit showcased a collection of large drawings in which the boundaries between charcoal, pencil, body and landscape have been blurred. In the encounter with what is drawn and with landscape, the body takes on a new appearance as 'Earthling': an earthly protest creature, imbued with nature, full of emotion, powerful and rebellious.
Choreographies of Care & Resistance | Act 1 | 120 x 180cm | 2023
Choreographies of Care & Resistance | Act 1 - This piece is part of a larger body of performative drawings that speak to our (in)ability to carry or be carried, to see vulnerability as strength, to loose control. The large drawings that set the stage in many of the works bear the markings of charcoal, locally sourced mud and pastel. As in my other work the series also addresses the creative process itself. A way of bearing witness to the intimacy between the known and the unknown, the moment and the material, and to putting oneself at stake in order to bring something new into being. The purposeful amplification of color in some of these works coincides with the emergence this new line of artistic inquiry in 2023, which continues to shape my practice today.
Site-specific installation at BIG ART
Site-specific installation at BIG ART - For the 2024 edition of BIG ART I built a site-specific installation combining a still photographic image with a huge sculpture going up the wall and ceiling.
Treedance - Giclée print on Hahnemühle paper mounted on dibond, 77 x 110 cm - Part of the Land(e)scape Series. Amidst mountains, fields and forests I search for interactions between body, landscape and material. On the spot, but also later when I continue to work on an image in my studio. What drives me is to evoke an intimate connection between interior and exterior presence.
Warm Mountain - 60 x 90cm Giclée print on Dibond - This work is part of series of pictures in which body and hair enter into sculptural dialogues with collapsed drawings. Hair becomes continuous with strokes of charcoal and clay still wet, while the body withdraws and emerges from this unlikely mountain and all it evokes.

Here Be Dragons

Datum:
Locatie: Werkpaard

Exhibit with drawings and mixed media works by Iris Frerichs, Maja Badnjevic en Marijke de Pous.

"Legend goes 'Here Be Dragons' would appear on maps just like mapmakers would place monsters and other imagined creatures to mark unexplored areas. There is appeal in the unknown as much as it unsettles. We search for tension and juxtapose opposites. What might we find? We scatter. We become what is other, while structures and landscape become creature."
