Mohamed Abdelkarim (Minya, 1983) is an interdisciplinary artist and curator working across performance, film, writing, and sonic practices. His practices are committed to performativity, through the overwritten script that moves through speculation, mythofiction, and eschatology, to the textures of rapture and defeat. His endeavors contemplate a world that might be undone and remade. His current umbrella project focuses on reconstructing reality, titled (Fiction as a reality we missed)
His performances have been included in Cabaret Voltaire, Manifesta 11, Zurich, 2016; Photo Cairo 5th and 6th, Contemporary Image Collective (CIC), Egypt, 2012 and 2017; Live Works Performance Act Award Vol. 5, 37° Edizione Drodesera, Trento, Italy, 2017; Interazioni Festival, Rome, Italy, 2022 and 2025; and Festival Internazionale della Performance, Performative 04, at MAXXI L'Aquila, 2024. Sonic Acts Biennial (Amsterdam), Techno-Ancestrality, the IMPAKT Festival (Utrecht), 2026. He established "Live Praxes", a performance encounter that includes workshops, seminars, and performance nights.
Unbearable Horizons
This exhibition, Unbearable Horizons, presents three recent works by Mohamed Abdelkarim. It features two works produced between 2021 and 2024, alongside an installation version of the ongoing performance work Blue Gaze at the Future.
The three works share fragmented fiction-narratives that complicate the relationship between notions of body, performativity, language, and the effects of defeat, grief, and hope. By revisiting historical events and speculating on future crises.

The Taste of Water Leaky vessels, flowing rituals and non-consensual collaborations
The Taste of Water is a site for multiple encounters with and around water. The exhibition is a leaky vessel, with artworks flowing in and out of the space. Propositions are realized elsewhere only to wash up on the Academy's shores. As an exhibition, performance space, screening room, and ritual space, The Taste of Water takes cues from water's characteristics – flowing, shape-shifting, non-linear – appearing as a medium and signifier, in the shape of sensorial sculpture, sound installation ...

KAS, a group show
KAS is a group exhibition of a performative nature which constitutes the third episode of the "Anti-modern Trilogy", a cycle of exhibitions that Centrale Fies has been dedicating for some years to the relationship between objects and their activations, re-evaluating forms of knowledge (affective, somatic, visual) censored or suppressed by Western sex-colonial modernity.
At the crossroads of different pasts, presents and futures
The Tellers grew out of the same question that had also previously led to the digital exhibition A Whole Population of Poets presented on Sumac Space – a platform devoted to Contemporary Art from the Middle East through programs, critical writing, and research.
The Tellers
A performance consisting of texts and images generated by the GPT-2-Artificial Intelligence model combined in a non-linear narrative. The narrative started from the event of a UFO sighting in Asyut, Egypt in 1989, moving on to other events in the same year. The AI-generated narrative moves between different milieus and characters, involving creatures from outer space, alien abduction, coup d'état, and the extinction of terrestrial species.

During his residency at Camargo, Mohamed worked on his project [let the sea eat me: to perform a ferry], which is a new episode of his long-term project, that thinks through the history of different phases of fugitives/renegades such as immigrants, mercenary, tourists, rovers, queers, and exiles, and their relation to the sea as dissimilarity zone.
