Nael Quraishi is an artist who lives and works between Rotterdam and Karachi. Having grown up in both Pakistan and the UK, the roots of his practice lay deeply within childhood recollections and memories of space and place. Working mainly with photo and video, Quraishi casts a subtle yet sharp light on the individual and collective experience of nostalgia, displacement and (be)longing, highlighting its lasting affect on everyday life.

**Grounding – Stories of Migration, FOTODOK x BredaPhoto, 2024** - Work on show: This is home after all 2020 - 2023, Notes on Familiarity 2023. Grounding - Stories of Migration shows work by seven artists telling stories about first-generation migration, about those who came to the Netherlands by their own choice or circumstances. It is a reflection on the processes of identity formation and making a home for oneself in the diaspora. These are two constantly evolving pursuits for people who have been uprooted. Split into parts or caught between past and present, the urge to define a new sense of home - and thus a new sense of self - becomes stronger than ever. Curated by Daria Tuminas

**One Hiccup, Quartair Contemporary Art Initiatives, 2023** - Work on show: a place, no longer, 2019 One cannot sing and eat at the same time, to sing is to starve, to eat is to be in silence. The dichotomy proposes a field of speculation regarding materiality, consumption and human relation to the environment (nature/culture). Hiccups is an exhibition involving culinary practices, sound and visual arts. The curatorial interest stems from the intersection of these practices. Curators Trang Hà and Andrejs Poikāns invite local and international artists to reflect on this topic and to create multisensory works.

**This is home after all, 2020 - 2023** - This is home after all, Den Hertigstraat 1, 2022, 20.5 x 28 cm, manually layerd and cut out black and white laser prints. Through acts of observation, looking through window frames, while physically staying put in one place, my mind offers a space for contemplation while it flirts with other memories of home-like places, triggered by the slightest relatable element, it searches for a similar vignette of a memory from a place that in the past also felt like a home, reaching out on to another reality. Suddenly everything beyond my living room window is transformed. A fluid combination of reality and fact that exist both in the past present and future. A constant collision of geographies dotted with the daily mundaneness of life. These images explore the ideas that the mind re-creates, revealing perhaps the most realistic version of what the personal home currently looks like.

**The Myth of Return, 2022** - The Empty Bench x Flights I Could Have Taken Verbeelding, Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam, NL 2022 Het Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam presenteert van 21 mei tot en met 25 september 2022 de tentoonstelling Verbeelding. Als nationale schatkist en toonzaal verzamelt en exposeert het museum fotografie die reflecteert op de wereld en adresseert het onderwerpen die urgent zijn. Daarom maken we nu middels de tentoonstelling Verbeelding werk van het thema ‘representatie’: wie vertegenwoordigt wie in de samenleving en in de fotografie? Wanneer we spreken over het Nederlands fotografisch erfgoed en de Nederlandse fotografie, over welke fotografie en welke makers hebben we het dan? En over wie wordt er niet gesproken? Wiens erfgoed krijgt bestaansrecht en erkenning in het museum en wiens erfgoed wordt juist niet gezien of erkend? In Verbeelding krijgen 23 beeldmakers een podium waarop zij op eigen voorwaarde hun verhouding tot de wereld te laten zien. De werken die in de tentoonstelling getoond worden zijn in de eerste plaats geselecteerd op basis van kwaliteit, onderscheidenheid en de kracht van de makers die in hun werk een eigen wereld scheppen. Het Nederlands Fotomuseum kiest bewust voor fotografen met een eigen signatuur, beeldmakers die de wereld bevragen en het visuele verhaal van representatie op eigen wijze weten over te brengen.

A sharp selection has been made for the festival, that shows a generation focusing on fundamental emancipation processes.
