Berkveldt is a Rotterdam-based audiovisual art studio. The projects are rooted in scientifically-based research and explore the interplay between humanity and the natural world.

Through extensive research, Berkveldt incorporates practical, local, and personal knowledge to provide new insights into complex social issues. The immersive installations and audiovisual stories offer a unique perspective on the world. Berkveldt's work challenges human perceptions of reality by using magical realism to offer a different angle on societal and cultural challenges. By incorporating non-human perspectives, viewers are invited to explore the fantastical and the magical within the everyday world. Berkveldt offers a unique vision of the future, challenging dominant paradigms and encouraging us to rethink our relationship with nature.

Noëlle Ingeveldt graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and achieved her Master of Arts at M.I.A.R.D Piet Zwart Instituut. She teaches at the HKU Bachelor Design for Change and Innovation.

**Of Boar and Fungi: A Nuclear Love Affair** - Of Boar and Fungi: A Nuclear Love Affair is a multispecies ethnography translated into an immersive, research-based installation that traces the surprising affinities forged in the wake of nuclear disaster. Together with anthropologist Bettina Stoetzer and artist .sa Sonjasdotter, we follow wild boar, fungi, soil, and radiocesium as they entangle across European forests. Our narrative adopts the boar’s vantage as it rummages for deer truffles; small, mycorrhizal fungi flourishing around mature pine, spruce, and beech. Decades after nuclear testing and the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, radiocesium lingers in mineral-rich soils. Deer truffles draw radiocesium through their mycelia; growing below ground, they absorb contamination from deeper layers. Boar relish these fungi, and through that appetite radiation endures as a slow, ecological inheritance. Inside the installation, screened with epoxy-treated fiberglass veils, two tilted screens carry a two screen video montage while audiences rest on root-shaped cushions. We stage a deliberately messy aesthetic, a mycelial logic rather than clean geometry. You find yourself beneath the forest floor, on an earthen “carpet,” nestled among roots, looking upward through imagined soil layers toward the snouts of foraging boar. We ground the installation in cross-border fieldwork, filmed in the Netherlands and Germany, and in a toolkit we built for the task: macro-lens cinematography to capture the texture of boar snouts; self-built microphones to register vibrations in trees, soil, and fungi; and a custom-built timelapse rig to document fungal growth. From these materials we compose an audio-visual score that moves from curiosity to unease: the rustle of snouts, the soft crumble of soil, the steady hum of contaminated earth. A multilanguage voice-over, English layered with German, amplifies the installation’s dualities and European context; shifting between tongues, the narration stages a quiet tension between analysis and embodiment, echoing the work’s split vantage points. By expanding Stoetzer’s anthropological research through our audio-visual and spatial practice, we make multispecies entanglement palpable. We ask how damaged landscapes recompose relations among species; how appetite, mineral layers, and fallout bind worlds together; how the afterlives of disaster reorganize what thrives. **Perlijn, how a pod taught the earth to listen** - Perlijn is a scenographic installation and mythic narrative about transformation, reciprocity, and the promise of a renewed relationship with the earth. Conceived as a symbol for another kind of agriculture—one in which humans and nature meet as partners, it invites visitors to dwell with plant life as kin rather than resource. Inspired by Pythagorean thought, where beans were said to house souls and resemble embryos, thus signifying the beginning of life, the pod becomes a beating heart of reciprocity; a source of nourishment and connection between human, plant, and soil. In Perlijn, this lineage becomes a contemporary fable that reframes everyday eating as an ethical, cultural choice. The installation brings together voice, music, and research to create a tactile, immersive environment. Visitors are guided by sound and narrative through a slow choreography of attention. The scenography invites them to tune into the quiet rhythms of plants and the living presence of soil. Perlijn follows a movement from rupture to repair, inviting reflection on the silence that follows harm, the breath that reconnects us, and the slow time in which new meaning can take root. Perlijn does not offer a blueprint, but a possibility. A story in which the earth reclaims space through forms of intelligence that resist human planning—fungi, seeds, wind. It gestures toward an agricultural imagination rooted in diversity, not domination. At its heart lies a pod, not planted by human hands, but sprung from necessity—an interruption to centuries of habit. From this intervention, a different kind of space unfolds: a living cathedral, unbuilt yet standing strong. A world of polyphonic fields, where beans, grains, flowers, microbes, and soil breathe in unison. Through the bean, the installation invites a re-ritualization of nourishment: not as consumption, but as communion. Myth, memory, and sensory detail fold into one another to suggest the beginning of another world. The work was created in collaboration with scientist Frank Lee Harris, Don.t Istv.n Kuti, Otto Calmeijer Meijburg, Dr. Stacy Pyett, Dr. Arjan Sterken and Remco de Kluizenaar. **The Last Breath** - The artistic research for this project started with a conversation during an artist-in-residence at Wageningen University & Research, where post-harvest physiologist Dr. ir. Bastiaan Brouwer shared a disquieting insight: a harvested tomato is not dead; it still respires, produces stress hormones, and slowly suffocates. The Last Breath is an immersive installation that makes this post-harvest life perceptible. We turn this hidden metabolism into a bodily experience: sensors register real-time CO₂, humidity, and temperature fluctuations, and visitors “breathe along” with the fruit as its breath falters. In a bright, pared-back space, a transparent container filled with tomatoes hangs like a biological center. Around it, four softly gleaming latex “lungs” rise and fall; their motion is driven by the tomatoes’ respiratory data. As oxygen drops and CO₂ peaks, the movement gradually quickens, until the installation comes to a halt and edges toward stillness. Suffocation is an underlying theme, not a spectacle, but a felt pressure that invites empathy without sentimentality. The work speaks to food waste and mortality together. By letting audiences experience that a tomato “lives on” in the fridge, we invite a different ethic of care for perishable foods; we also widen the frame of death in art, showing how post-harvest physiology can become spatial experience and how art, design, and the life sciences can crosspollinate in public. Our artistic research translates invisible biochemistry into credible breath. During two working periods at Werkplaats Diepenheim, we conducted extensive tests on breathing mechanisms (air; servo-controlled linear actuators); material studies with latex and various technical fabrics for responsive membranes; and experiments in data-driven sound in which sensor streams steer the sonic environment. From this, we developed an intimate interface where a dying metabolism sets the tempo of space; where slow kinetics counter the screendriven feedback loops that dominate media art; and where visitors register decay in their own breathing. **Waterkapel** - Almere is the most water-rich city in the Netherlands and aims to become the most water-pure; this requires a deliberate approach to aquatic ecosystems and to the role of natural processes within them. Yet Dutch inland waters are intensively managed: dead wood and submerged vegetation are often removed, which strips away nutrients, refuge, and breeding habitat. With Waterkapel, we investigate and make the dynamics between ecology and water quality visible. We created a symbiotic artwork that pairs art and ecology; it reflects on human intervention while actively contributing to biodiversity. Installed at Kunstmuseum M in Almere as a material study and as a site for biological and artistic research, Waterkapel is inspired by a medieval church roof uncovered during the construction of Almere Pampus. Built from native wood and positioned just below the surface, it offers shelter and spawning grounds for aquatic life, and becomes a substrate for algae and water plants. Over the exhibition period the structure grows over; visitors can follow this transformation through a periscope. The periscope introduces both physical and symbolic distance; it prompts reflection on our role in the ecosystem. Visitors observe the object across successive phases of growth and are invited to notice processes that usually unfold outside our field of view. The recognizable church spire, just breaking the surface, ties the city’s past to the present waterscape, while flora and fauna gradually claim the structure. Throughout the exhibition, students from Aeres University of Applied Sciences monitor the work’s ecological impact; they track plant growth, species richness, and interactions with local fauna. Findings are reported periodically and shared with the City of Almere and Aeres; they also inform future artistic and ecological projects. **De Zeven Plagen van Styx** - The Seven Plagues of Styx / De Zeven Plagen van Styx "The Seven Plagues of Styx" is an interdisciplinary artistic exploration that combines mythology, ecological research, and immersive performance to shed light on the ecological crises of our time. At its core is the mythological river Styx, reimagined as the narrator of a tale centered on the Red American Crayfish and its impact on Dutch ecosystems. The species has spread rapidly through the Netherlands, thriving in human-altered environments while disrupting native biodiversity and destabilizing aquatic systems. The project situates this ecological challenge within the broader framework of the Anthropocene—a geological epoch defined by human activity—and the Capitalocene, which critiques capitalism’s role in exploiting nature and labor. By linking the local issue of crayfish proliferation to systemic global dynamics, "The Seven Plagues of Styx" reveals the interconnectedness of ecological, economic, and cultural forces. The artistic translation of these themes takes shape in an immersive multimedia installation. Video footage, 3D scans, and sound recordings recreate the underwater world of the crayfish, juxtaposing its beauty and destruction. These elements are brought to life in a live performance by theater maker Otto Calmeijer Meijburg, who embodies Styx’s voice and presence. Together, the installation and performance invite audiences to reflect on their relationship with nature, making complex environmental issues both tangible and emotionally resonant. Field research underpins the project, with extensive documentation of crayfish behavior and habitat through advanced scanning and filming techniques. Collaboration with scientists, ecologists, and local stakeholders enriched the narrative with real-world insights. Flevoland, a region reclaimed from the sea, became a focal point of study, offering a contrasting perspective on crayfish impact due to its hard clay soils and nature-friendly banks. Solutions like Waardenburg Ecology’s CrayBar—a predator-friendly structure to manage invasive species—highlight pathways for ecological restoration through innovative human intervention. Ultimately, "The Seven Plagues of Styx" transcends the boundaries between art and science, mythology and reality. By interweaving these domains, the project challenges audiences to confront ecological crises not as isolated issues but as symptoms of deeper systemic imbalances. It is a call to reimagine humanity’s role within the natural world, transforming awareness into action and fostering a collective responsibility for preserving biodiversity. **Reflections on Disturbed Cycles** - Reflections on Disturbed Cycles explores the growing impact of light pollution on biological rhythms and ecosystems. As one of the countries with the highest levels of light pollution in the world, the Netherlands has become a landscape of glowing greenhouses, illuminated highways, and urban areas that never experience true darkness. This constant artificial light disrupts not only human biological cycles but also those of animals that rely on natural day-night patterns for orientation, foraging, and predation. Birds get disoriented, insects are drawn into street lamps, and habitats are altered by the glare of headlights. Berkveldt brings this issue to life in a visually compelling and immersive installation. Reflections on Disturbed Cycles features 12 mirrored plexiglass cubes, each housing a robotic animal endlessly reflected in the mirrored surfaces. Inside every cube is a lamp, programmed to simulate a natural day-night cycle, disrupted by erratic light patterns inspired by greenhouses, car headlights, and street lamps. The robotic creatures respond to these altered rhythms, and as the light intensity increases, their movements grow increasingly frantic, mirroring the disorientation caused by light pollution. This multisensory experience engages the viewer directly with the effects of artificial light on the natural world. Through the distorted reflections and frantic motions of the robotic animals, Reflections on Disturbed Cycles illustrates how human activities can disrupt entire ecosystems and lead to the disintegration of vital natural rhythms. The installation serves as both a visual spectacle and a wake-up call—inviting us to rethink how our modern infrastructure impacts the environment and how we can reconnect with the natural world. This project was created during a residency at Studio Zookeeper and exhibited at Dutch Design Week at Bio Art Laboratories as part of the symbiocene forest: coexistence.

**Ans en het Universum** - The documentary premiered on the 26th of januari during IFFR (International Film Festival Rotterdam). Ans Hoornweg's extraordinary life, her out-of-body experiences, and communication with extraterrestrials are explored in this sincere testimonial by Berkveldt. In Poortugaal, a small village just south of Rotterdam, lives Ans Hoornweg – an 80-year-old spiritual medium with tales as vast as the cosmos. The documentary "Ans and the Universe" offers a captivating portrayal of Ans, who is an incarnated alien from the distant planet of Laborax. This isn't mere fantasy; interstellar travels and conversations with extraterrestrial entities have defined Ans her life. Ans has crafted dolls of many of her celestial friends, a tangible memory of her vast intergalactic network. Since the 1980s, Dutch television audiences have been both bemused and intrigued by Ans and her collection of alien companions. In 2016, she began sharing her message online, with the support of her confidante Merlinde. Through her YouTube channel, she shares otherworldly wisdom and delivers a stern caution about humanity's reckless treatment of Earth. Her persistent claim that "the aliens are already here, living peacefully among us" might have garnered admiration within the New Age circles, it also marked her as an outsider amidst her own kind. The documentary "Ans and the Universe" moves between moments of kind-heartedness, melancholy and solitude. It's an exploration of belief, identity, and the touching spaces in between, a moving narrative of a woman moving between cosmic connections and earthly isolation. Berkveldt captures this duality with a delicate touch while documenting Ans in the last years of her life. Through their lens, viewers are taken behind the scenes of Ans' YouTube presence, witnessing her life unfold, where each piece – a personal moment or a broadcast snippet – form a part of her vibrant story. The audience is offered a unique opportunity to journey across alien realms alongside Ans.

**Necrosonic Landscapes** - Exploring the Transitional Realm Between Life and Death ‘Necrosonic Landscapes’ is an artistic research project exploring the transitional realm between life and death. Berkveldt documented the decay of a deceased roebuck using two piezo microphones (contact microphones) and one directional microphone, capturing the audio from the decomposition process. Not only were the sounds of decomposition recorded, but also the sounds of all the animals that benefit from the carcass. The metamorphosis in the soil was made visible by periodically sampling the earth beneath the roebuck. These samples were filmed under a microscope, revealing all the microorganisms benefiting from the carcass. The results were merged into a singular audiovisual installation. ‘Necrosonic Landscapes’ showcases the life that emerges from death, highlighting the importance of death in nature and offering a new perspective on the cycle of life and death. 'Necrosonic Landscapes' was exhibited at Dutch Design Week 2023 at Bio Art Laboratories and at the New Current Exhibition during Rotterdam Art Week 2024. **Bear Country** - Reimagining Coexistence and Preserving History. "Bear Country" embarks the viewer on an engaging artistic research journey. This thought-provoking project delves into the European bear population's resurgence and its potential migration to the Netherlands, fostering crucial discussions on cohabitation between humans and wildlife. ? Through meticulous artistic research and close collaboration with biologists, conservationists, and ecologists, Berkveldt unveils a transformative odyssey. Immersed in European landscapes, the artists engage with shepherds, beekeepers, and farmers, gathering invaluable insights into the delicate interplay between humans and bears. ? Delving into local museums, Berkveldt uncovers historical artifacts, immersing themselves in the rich heritage of the region. Additionally, paying homage to the bears that ventured from Italy to Germany and Switzerland, the artists employ advanced 3D scanning techniques to immortalize these iconic animals, visiting multiple museums in the process. ? "Bear Country" emerges as an artistic inquiry that bridges perspectives, inviting contemplation on harmonious coexistence and preservation of the bear's legacy. Through their visionary exploration, Berkveldt fosters a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics between nature and humanity, inspiring a collective consciousness rooted in respect for the wild and the preservation of our shared heritage. ? **Dead and Alive** - Revealing the Eternal Choreography of Nature's Decay and Rebirth In our often sheltered existence, the presence of deceased animals rarely graces our vision. Yet, within the sacred embrace of nature, death yields life, nourishing myriad flora and fauna. Through the deliberate decomposition of a fallen roebuck within the terrain of Bio Art Laboratories, the intersection of death and biodiversity was unveiled. Employing an intricate tapestry of 16 cameras and photogrammetry software, the intricate nuances of this transformative process were rendered visible. The resultant revelations were skillfully interwoven into a contemporary fairytale, employing the language of costumes to convey profound truths. By exhibiting this enigmatic creation within the Symbiosene forest of Bio Art Laboratories, the boundaries between reality and fantasy dissolved. Immersing viewers in the embrace of death, we sought to cultivate an understanding that transcends fear, inspiring an embrace of death's intrinsic role within nature's realm. ? **Under Six Meters of Sand - Onder zes meter zand** - Documentary about the destructive expansion of Europoort "Under Six Meters of Sand" presents a compelling documentary that exposes the profound consequences of rapid industrial expansion of the Port of Rotterdam in the aftermath of the Second World War. Focused on reconstruction and economic progress, society witnessed a dramatic transformation of the area. With the increased frequency of large oil tankers and massive container ships navigating towards the port, a westward expansion was initiated, resulting in the obliteration and burial of two villages, Blankenburg and Nieuwesluis, as well as the natural reserve De Beer, beneath six meters of sand. ? This seemingly inconspicuous act of destruction carries far-reaching implications. The documentary meticulously unravels the actions taken by the Port of Rotterdam and the City of Rotterdam, illuminating the consequences of their decisions. Through insightful interviews with Ed Buijsman, the author of "Een eerste klas landschap," and bird expert Gerard Ouweneel, the film offers a nuanced perspective on the environmental and societal impact. Originally broadcasted on RTV Rijnmond and showcased at TENT Rotterdam:'Rotterdam Cultural Histories, Under Six Meters of Sand', the documentary serves as a thought-provoking exploration of the intersection between industrial progress and its lasting legacy.

**The Return of the Wolf** - With the resolute return of the wolf after a 150-year absence, the Dutch landscape faces introspection and transformation. In a land where nature and its inhabitants are confined by fences, biodiversity suffers. Yet, unimpeded by such barriers, wolves roam freely, offering a compelling lesson in harmonious coexistence. This natural intervention compels us to question our human behavior, to reassess the boundaries we impose upon ourselves and the wild. ? In response to this paradigm shift, Berkveldt crafts a cross-media immersive experience that weaves the tale of the wolf. Through a blend of historical and contemporary media, an animated narrative unfolds, transcending time and bridging the gap between past, present, and future. Within this artistic exploration, fences fade into the realm of imagination, as a speculative vision emerges, revealing a world where humanity and nature are intertwined without constraint. ? "The Return of the Wolf" invites us to embrace this transformative journey, where the echoes of the wolf's return resonate, urging us to reconnect with nature's harmonious rhythm. Together, we embark on an artistic odyssey that rekindles our bond with the wild, fostering a landscape where fences no longer divide, and the wolf roams freely once more. ? "Necrosonic Landscapes" is an artistic exploration by Berkveldt into the space between life and death, documenting the decay of a roebuck. Through contact and directional microphones, the project captures the sounds of decomposition and the life it nurtures, including soil microorganisms visible under a microscope. This audiovisual installation emphasizes death's vital role in nature's cycle, offering a fresh perspective on life and death's interconnectedness. It was featured at DDW 2023.
