Since 2010, Philipp Schwalb has been experimenting with and questioning the animation of color and figuration in images, their communications, conditions, impacts and frameworks. With practices such as Painting als adjektivale Instelling, Mnemeosyne.picture.Atlas, BilderCommons, Image-Constellation-Panels and Artlanguages = social figurations, he translates personal stories and social-artistic questions into, onto and out of images, their transformative processes, their contained details and their active complexes. He often expands his core painting practice to include other visual forms, exhibitions, poems, raps, diagrams, inverted objects, teaching, texts, workshops, panels, publications & conventions.

Since 2011, he has been working on a research project on Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne.Atlas. He co-founded Forschungsgruppe Mnemosyne in Hamburg in 2012 and co-curated an exhibition at the ZKM Karlsruhe in 2016, in which the entire Mnemosyne.Atlas was shown. In 2017, he co-founded the MNEMOSYNE Study Groups in Zurich and Geneva. In 2020, he initiated the Mnemosyne.Atlas.Läb in Berlin, which has developed into an international forum and hybrid format between online and in-person meetings. Until now he organized 31 MALäbs with 26 artists.

Philipp Schwalb has exhibited or curated at the following venues, among others: Agence de Voyage, (Paris), Kirchgasse (Steckborn), New Toni (Berlin), Le Frac Lorraine, LE CAP (Lyon), Kunsthalle Langenthal, Balcony (Lisbon), Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp (Cully), Kunsthalle Basel, ZKM Karlsruhe, Kunstraum Munich, Villa Romana (Florence), Niklas Schechinger (Hamburg), New Bretagne (Essen), David Castillo (Miami), Galerie Christine Mayer (Munich), Bernd Kugler (Innsbruck), Produzentengalerie (Hamburg), Forde (Geneva), and others.

Mnemosyne.Atlas.Läb #30
Mnemosyne.Atlas.Läb #30 "kind?" with Matthias Sohr 09.02.2025 at Ausstellungsraum Klingtal - In the context of the exhibition “Fremde Kinder”, M.A.Läb #30 examines the role of the child and the ways in which images address their viewers, representations of growing up and leaving the nest as well as the accessibility of (sacred) places and art (reception) in and on the basis of Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne.Atlas. After a brief introduction to this complex of themes and the kind/das Kind/the child in the Mnemosyne.Atlas, Matthias Sohr presented his Image-Constellation-Panel on the basis of which he discussed various aspects of the social, cultural, bodily and architectural accessibility of art with reference to his own practice. His ICP helps to interweave questions of accessibility to art with forms of social upbringing (including his own) and the psychological afterlife of (personal) family entanglements. As examples of Warburg's panels in which these points of view come together, we will show panels 47 and 24 from the Mnemosyne.Atlas.
Mnemosyne.Atlas.Läb #25
Mnemosyne.Atlas.Läb #25 - Workshop and Panel Discussion organized by Philipp Schwalb New Toni, Berlin September 9, 2023 Mnemosyne.Atlas.Läb #25 started with a brief image-based presentation by Philipp Schwalb about „ PROSERPINA in the and questioning the MNEMOSYNE & ATLAS”. We discussed if and where we could find points of contact in the MNEMOSYNE.ATLAS with questions which are interesting and urgent for our private and contemporary mindset. Is there the possibility to talk about nature, environmentalism, carrying, caring, exploitation, exhibitions, work, art historical contextualization, health, work, images, inequality, feminism, colonialism, racism, social-media, education, new technologies, commons, family, migration, discrimination, friendship, gestures of violence and many more (not mentioned here but, very urgent as well) in this context?
E/Iconomic Sediments - Organized with Dafni Melidou and Image Constellation Panel with Jakob Forster @Goethe Institut Rotterdam, 2023 “Investigating E/Iconomic Sediments” was a series of four monthly discursive and image-based assemblies, hosted by Dafni Melidou and Philipp Schwalb at Goethe-Institut Rotterdam, dedicated to image-constellations (Iconomy). The overarching theme of the assemblies was the interpretative complexity and current societal importance of discussing the concept of “Economy”. In other words, what are the structures and organizations of our fundamental social institutions (Economies)? Each assembly addressed a different topic that was investigated in and through images. More specifically it critically reflected on the economies of the gathering, the family, the market and the state. During each assembly these topics were visually explored by invited guest-experts, further discussed from the participants in an image-based workshop, informed by hand-picked books and finally savored in a collective dinner.

MnemosyneAtlas-Lab #0, Berlin 2020 - The Mnemosyne.Atlas.Läb is a community, an instrument and a place where artists have come together in recent years to reflect on the panels of Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne Atlas, to think together about image constellations and to see, listen to and discuss the custom-made Image-Constellation-Panels by invited artists. These artist panels have a threefold meaning: they are virtual or material display panels, at the same time works of art (images) as well as representations of the artist's research and interests that can be shared in a conversation within a group. Each Mnemosyne.Atlas.Läb has a thematic reference to panels of the Mnemosyne.Atlas, is oriented towards contemporary (Bild) discourses and is mostly site- and context-specific.
