Rafael Romero Peña (1988, ES/NL) is a visual artist, writer, and filmmaker based in ​Rotterdam. His work explores the concept of “gaze” and its deconstruction through ​sculpture, writing, and film. Rafael is particularly interested in how contextual images are ​staged or depicted through the sociopolitical biographies of objects, architecture, and ​collective memory. He frequently uses storytelling and fiction to examine themes of legacy, ​belonging, and heritage.

Solo, 2025. - SOLO, 2025. Film 17.15 mins Salvador Torres is a professional athlete currently training for his first Olympic Games. The son of athletes, with a Spanish mother and a Cuban father, he decides to travel to Havana to meet his father for the first time. Upon returning to Madrid, he receives unexpected news that will make him question his reasons for competing. This work was made possible thanks to Mondriaan Start Grant.

La Caja
La Caja, 2021. - La Caja, 2021. Short film 3 mins. La Caja is a teaser video exploring the contents of an old medicine box from 1920. The items in the box retrace memories of family members found in those pictures. This work was part of the Research Lab at Eye Museum 2021.
Fever, 2019. - Inspired by the claustrophobic atmosphere of Hong Kong, Fever is a reflection on the confrontation between traditional values and contemporary lifestyles, the idea of the exotic and its visual representation—a film expressing the complexities of gazing at foreign cultures through visual media.
