Suzanne Somer is a multidisciplinary artist working across embroidery, ceramics, photography and performance. Her practice is defined by a reduced visual language and an interest in the transformation of existing forms, images and objects. Through reduction, reconstruction and shifts in context, familiar forms are opened to new interpretations.
Material and process are determined by each individual work. Materials are selected for their physical and visual qualities and remain present as themselves. A restrained palette of black, white, natural and muted tones, together with simple forms and a considered use of space, connects the different media within her practice.
Juxtaposition is a recurring formal strategy. Organic and geometric forms, chance and control, fast and slow processes, and positive and negative elements are brought together within a single work. Repetition and small shifts in form create rhythm, structure and movement.
Rather than reproducing an existing form, Somer reduces, transforms and reconstructs it. Traces of the original remain, while changes in form, material or context shift its perception and allow it to be read differently.
