Tianyi Zheng, Tin-e (1995, CN) is an artist/researcher based in Hong Kong and the Netherlands, whose current interests include the interface and narrative between space, place, the identity of people, as well as heterotopology and hauntology. Displayed in mixed media installations, her work consisted of found objects, video, sound, and performance. She graduated from Frank Mohr Institute (MFA in MADTech) in 2021 and received a BA in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2018). Zheng's work has been shown in major exhibitions including TANK Q, Shanghai (2025), Simose Art Museum, Hiroshima (2025), Art Rotterdam (2025), and Het Wilde Weten, Rotterdam (2023). She is currently artist-in-residence at Young Arts Tech Talents Residency Hong Kong (2024-2025), following residencies at K11 Art Village Wuhan (2024). Zheng was awarded the Jan Naaijkens Prize (2022) and received support from the Mondriaan Fund Artist Start (2023), Amarte Fund (2023), and CBK Grant (2024). Her recent curatorial work includes Nature of Rotterdam Summer Residency (2025), Yours Strangers (2024), and Once Again in One's Hand (2021).

Trashscape Playground
Trashscape Playground" Artist residency in CRASH X RACCOONS Studio - Trashscape Playground was developed and presented by RACCOONS Studio (Tianyi Zheng & Panida Te Petchara) during their residency at CRASH, an independent art space in Hong Kong. The project brought together installation, live cinema, and interactive media to examine the strange emotional lives of discarded objects—especially toys—collected by artist Tianyi Zheng over several years while moving between Rotterdam, Hong Kong, and other project sites. The residency culminated in an open studio, a live cinema performance, and a public sharing session with local artists.
Where Comes Mulan
Where Comes Mulan - Where Comes Mulan is a research-based moving-image installation that weaves video, photo, sound, and space to explore “Mulan” as a complex symbol across history, myth, and nationhood. Since the 1990s, the artist’s hometown has been reshaped into “Mulan Township,” where she is staged as a brand and spectacle. Yet in memories, she appears as a commodity, martyr, goddess, and ghost. This work searches between grand official narratives and everyday memory, asking: Where is Mulan, and how does she echo in the present? My Shadow on Your Dust
My Shadow on Your Dust - Exhibited in the Simose Art Museum, Hiroshima, Japan, 2025. In My Shadow on Your Dust, Tianyi Zheng traces the silent lives of secondhand objects collected during her research in Hiroshima—from secondhand shops, antique shops, and the underground storage of Motomachi. The work unfolds across three rooms: a video monologue reflecting on displacement and the memory of things; a looped performance of automated installations that “wake up” in rhythm; and a simulated storage room where sensors trigger radios, lights, and fans to respond to visitors’ presence. Through mechanical gestures and ghostly materials, the work contemplates the residual aura of abandoned possessions and the fragile distance between history and the everyday.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - Solo Exhibition in the Gallery, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, Hong Kong, 2025. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is an interdisciplinary total installation interweaving theater, video, sound, and media technology to explore the spatial hauntings of memory, loss, and displacement. Inspired by the fairytale The Little Match Girl, the act of striking a match—its brief sound, “richtt”—became a structuring element, a spark that recurs throughout the piece as a sonic and symbolic gesture of desire, ignition, and erasure. The project began during our exhibition in The Hague, where a former antique shop was turned into an art space for the Hong Kong diaspora. I invited two performers to respond to that space in different timelines—one was filmed on-site in The Hague, the other in a replicated set built in a warehouse in Guangdong, China. These fragmented recordings form the basis of a four-channel video installation. At the opening performance in Hong Kong, both performers appeared together for the first time, not in reunion, but in spectral misalignment. The exhibition, held in March 2025 at the Art and Culture Center of the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, reconstructed the remembered living room with collected secondhand objects from across cities. The room became a stage for interaction—during the opening performance, performers activated light, sound, and curtains in real-time, responding to each other and to live music. During the exhibition period, the installation became autonomous: as visitors entered the room, the devices would trigger a five-minute programmed sequence of light, sound, and motion.
Where Comes Mulan_performance
Where Comes Mulan_performance - Performance during the Prospect Art Rotterdam 2025. Together with performers Qiaochu Guo, Echo Wang and musician Alan Ahued Naime, we will create an immersive experience that extends beyond the confines of traditional storytelling. This performance installation will feature live performance, scenography, and sound design as the core art forms, with the performers embodying Mulan’s dual identity.
An Invisible Thread for Those Who Walk Along
An Invisible Thread for Those Who Walk Along - In An Invisible Thread for Those Who Walk Along, I collaborated with artists Hussel Zhu and Panida Te Petchara to reinterpret the childhood game of "Cat's Cradle." Instead of using physical string, we performed the game through imaginary gestures, creating a poetic exploration of non-verbal communication and the fragility of understanding. This piece reflects our overarching theme of collectivity, as it emphasizes how connection is built and sometimes misunderstood in both physical and psychological spaces.
The Ship of Fools - Tianyi Zheng's solo exhibition "Ship of Fools" at Gallerieboii is a poignant and immersive exploration of memory, displacement, and socio-political flux. Returning to Hong Kong after nearly four years, Zheng re-engages with a space that was once her studio and living quarters, now transformed into a project space. This exhibition metaphorically charts the journey of an exiled madman who revisits with a treasure trove of forgotten stories, fantastical dreams, and haunted memories. "Ship of Fools" features a site-specific installation comprising videos, found objects, paintings, and performances. Zheng not only revisits her personal history but also reflects on Hong Kong’s broader socio-political landscape. This exhibition is a testament to her ability to weave together personal narratives and collective experiences, creating a space for reflection and dialogue.

the Department of Collective Collaboration - 2022 Performative meeting, installation, videos, text on walls, photos, sounds Collective work with Ida Leijting, Lena Longefay, Eliisa Loukola. As an office, as well as a meeting place, one of the main activities of the Department of Collective Collaboration is that of facilitating (in-person) conversations. Although the somewhat large (conference) table may fool you, these talks hardly involve anything conventionally office-like: the majority (if not all) of our work is performed casually; through water cooler gatherings, lunch talks and smoking-break conversations. The few ways in which our work may differ from day-to-day talk is that it is often (consensually) recorded, and (vaguely) centres around the topics of collectivity and collaboration.

"The Ship of Fools" is a reflection of ZHENG Tianyi after 4 years of living in Holland. It includes some mental and physical memories. She left the city in a pure and precious era, and preserved some of our unlikely memories. The works she brought back to Hong Kong are about memories we cannot have anymore, because all the people who remember have left.

The performance focused on the materiality of cable ties, which we find interesting as they can be functional as well as metaphorical. They are commonly found in our daily life, on construction sites, and in exhibition spaces. But also on the roadblock made by protesters, and at the hands of the arrested. During the performance, we explored how cable ties restrain, reshape or transform our bodies. By amplifying the repetitive zipping and breaking sound, it was just like never-ending fights.

Acting as a continuous nesting process (or almost a residency), the exhibition will open halfway through, as an on-site sharing of our methodologies, but also as a celebration of our conceptual common ground. Until the very end we will be challenging and (re)building each other's works, in order to rethink what art making really means.

Originated from the political movement in Hong Kong in 2019, “𝘈 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳” is a mixed media installation that metaphorically tells the story of the exiled imagination and suppressed. It is generally thought of grieving as something personal and insular, but when we publicly share loss and pain, we lesson the power of the forces that debilitate us. It is hoped that grievance would become a power to alleviate suffering and healing.
