Tekst door FIBER: Now that human industrial activity has reached into the capillaries of the planet – and a new era has dawned with the proposed name Anthropocene – humans are faced with monstrous changes of environment and unexpected and weird mutations of life and matter. For FIBER 2021 the artist Timaeus created a new version of his video installation Anthropocene Monsters. Inspired by the work of science fiction writer Jeff Vandermeer, the artist often explores the ‘Anthropocene monster of the 21st century’, referring to the horrors humans have created by grossly interfering with earth’s ecosystems. Monsters ask us why we have created them. The figure of the monster may thus be used to question, disturb, and alter the conventions it helps us to analyse. With this video installation the artist presents us a series of monsters from leftovers of 21st century crises. By 3D scanning and putting together leftovers of these issues that surround us daily, Timaeus speculates what the monsters of our time could look like. Through the usage of body movement and linking this with motion capture data, the objects start to live.
Yopo & Timaeus explore... 'Ruins Beyond the Veil' - Ruins beyond the veil is an audiovisual live show that explores a final haven, a resting ground for the once declared deceased. After an unexpectedly long time we traverse once more into the realms of disorienting woods, colorful coral, gloomy valleys and tech noir cities. So much has changed; depths have gone deeper and trees have grown larger. Yet one thing unifies it all: Amplified by abandonment, all have grown stranger. Yopo & Timaeus find themselves in an otherworldliness that can not be expressed more through words.
Raytracers
Raytracers - Raytracers is a series of light objects that explore refractions and the phenomenon of caustics; light rays that are reflected or refracted by a curved surface. In it’s first iteration, Timaeus presented 3 different light objects, especially made for the Design Biennale in Rotterdam, during it’s first edition in 2025. 768 individually-adressable leds covered by transparent PETG are able to present playful light sequences that interact between light and form. The different sequences are carefully crafted by looking at the different forms of the objects in comparison as to the way the light moves across the structures. Behind the transparent facade, a custom aluminium skeleton holds the objects in place, as well as the room where all the leds are mounted.
Ecology on a beacon of decay
Ecology on a beacon of decay - Patinated bronze carries an ecosphere that embodies renewal, growth and transformation. With materials gathered from around Het Archief Artspace, the ecosphere slowly changes throughout the time of the exhibition. Placed upon a beacon of decay, the contrast beteeen past and present is highlighted

Martyrs of the Anthropocene

Martyrs of the Anthropocene by artist Timaeus (Tim van Hooft) questions the relationships between people and the natural world in the Anthropocene. A digitally rendered nature and the narrator regale a myth with novel heroes: lichen and trees. These protagonists are the non-human martyrs of our age, adorned as they are with minerals and crystals that are exploited as resources in a world dominated by humans.
