Kunstproject | Flying Grass Carpet

Playing, having a picnic or just doing nothing: it's all possible at the Flying Grass Carpets on Noordplein. This art project by two Rotterdam design studios is intended to stimulate encounters in public space. The carpet transforms the stone square (partly) into a soft, green oasis.

The colorful synthetic turf, based on geometric motifs of Persian carpets, has been around since 2007 and has landed in many cities, at home and abroad. Last year the 360 square meter carpet was already placed on Noordplein. These were much appreciated by both local residents and entrepreneurs and there was a great desire to place the carpet on the town square again this year.

This project is partly realized thanks to a contribution from the scheme artistic activities in the city. With this contribution, CBK Rotterdam wants to use visual art to make the city more attractive and to give Rotterdam visual artists a role in this, thereby increasing their visibility.
